‘Dark Winds’ cast hopes to inspire more Indigenous shows

‘Dark Winds’ cast hopes their show will inspire more stories about Indigenous people. Zahn McClarnon and the team opened the ATX TV festival.

Dark winds, the noir thriller, which follows tribal police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn. He solves a series of crimes on Navajo land, opened the ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas. On Thursday night with cast members including Zahn McClarnon, Jessica Matten, Kiowa Gordon and Deanna Allison.

“We just hope that ‘Dark Winds’ keeps that door open for Indigenous talent and we continue on this route,”

McClarnon says, who plays Leaphorn, let the crowd know when requested how to keep stories from Indigenous individuals from turning into a “blip” on the Hollywood radar.

“I think it comes down to getting the voices heard and telling our stories. I just hope to be able to continue to do this show and keep opening that door for everyone.”

Gordon, in the mean time, depicted the second as a “calling of arms” for Indigenous individuals to “accept the responsibility” and compose and deliver new stories.

Matten added to loud commendation from the crowd,

“There will be where it’s really not necessary to focus on being Indigenous, you’re simply a damn decent entertainer,”

“Dark Winds,” which depends on Tony Hillerman’s secret books and chief delivered by George R.R. Martin and Robert Redford. In fact, it was shot by a group that is 85% Native American, as per the Hollywood Reporter.

Redford told,

“George and I felt strongly about this point, You want to honor the culture by getting it right, and who better to do that?”

The premiere night of ATX’s eleventh season marked the primary big in-person occasion for the yearly celebration since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020.

“Y’all, it’s been a wild three years. I don’t know about you, but we’ve been through a lot, and we can’t believe that it’s been that long since we’ve been here together,” Emily Gipson said  “We are so thankful to have each one of you here. Even more than that, we’re so thankful for how y’all have stuck with us for the past two years.”

Dark Winds had a great review, a solid mystery, and an outstanding performance driving AMC’s Navajo Tribal Police drama.

But, as with good mystery novels, it’s the characters that make the series worthwhile. Gordon and McClarnon play nicely off each other as their sometimes contentious partnership deepens into friendship.

In one of the series’ best, and quietest, scenes, Emma and Joe host Jim for dinner. When the subject of Joe and Emma’s lost son comes up it becomes clear that the younger officer has become important to Joe in ways he might not yet even realize.

It’s beautifully played by all three, in a break in the action that makes the show deeper and more meaningful. The world of the series is a rich, complicated one, and the story is twisty and clever enough to keep Dark Wind compelling, but it’s moments like that that could keep the series alive and improving season after season.

With luck, Dark Winds will get that chance (and maybe images like Joe’s heroic introduction will start to look a little less unusual if it does).
