Career

We might attribute Neuer’s success to fate or luck; whatever the case may be, Neuer was born to be a star. After graduating through the age groups, the German-made his Bundesliga debut with Schalke 04 in 2012.

Manuel came on as a late substitution on matchday two of the 2006/07 season when Schalke 04’s shot-stopper at the time, Frank Rost, was injured. Manuel Neuer, a 20-year-old up-and-coming goalkeeper, finally secured the starting job.

When a hapless Schalke was still in the game thanks to Neuer’s single heroics, the future seemed bright for this young German. In the UEFA Champions League knockout stage, Schalke faced FC Porto.

He dragged the game to penalties with several saves and critical judgments, saves from Bruno Alves and Lisandro López. Finally, the squad advanced to the quarter-finals.

After appearing in 50 games that season, Neuer was nominated for the Year Award’s UEFA Club Goalkeeper. Schalke number one was clearly attracting attention from all across the world.

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has expressed interest in the blonde goalkeeper.

Transfer to Bayern Munich & Criticism

Despite the fact that it was his final season with his local club, Manuel Neuer gave his all and won the DFB-Pokal with a 5-0 triumph over MSV Duisburg. The Gelsenkirchen native received harsh criticism after signing with Bayern Munich.

It’s reasonable if you’re disappointed. However, the criticism did not stop there. Neuer was met with hostility from the ever-fervent Bayern supporters.

During one of the games, numerous fans hoisted a hand-made banner that read: ‘Koan Neuer,’ which translates to ‘No Neuer.’

The antagonism is not due to a lack of faith in Neuer’s abilities. Fans reacted angrily when Neuer imitated Bayern Munich icon Oliver Kahn’s scoring celebration.

After a game against TSG Hoffenheim in which he kept three clean sheets in a row, shattering Kahn’s record, supporters realized why Neuer was there.

Commendation in the Champions League

The German shot-stopper excelled for both club and country. He proceeded to the next round of Europe’s largest competition, the UEFA Champions League, with Bayern Munich.

It was the year 2012, and the game had gone to penalties. Following that, the Bavarian shot-stopper made crucial stops from both Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaká, advancing Bayern to the semi-finals.

The finals were against a then-great Chelsea side that included Drogba and Lampard, both key members of the club. The finals, like the semis, were hoping to go to a penalty shootout.

The final was indeed exciting; Bayern did everything correctly, and they were an inch away from winning the championship. Neuer was unable to keep other balls out after saving shots from Juan Mata and scoring one himself.

The German was keen to make atonement after a painful setback at Allianz Arena. Manuel began the 2012-13 season with a DFL Supercup victory.

Bayern maintained a strong presence in the Bundesliga and was as dominant in the UCL. Manuel had an outstanding game, keeping clean sheets against both Juventus and Barcelona, as well as a 7-0 thumping of Barcelona in both games.

Captaining for Club & Country

The 2015-16 season was a joy for most supporters since the world’s top goalkeeper agreed to extend his contract until 2021. Despite a modest season, Bayern managed to win the title once again.

Bayern Munich and Neuer had a difficult season in 2016-17. He suffered a fracture to his left foot after the quarterfinals versus Real Madrid, thereby ending his season.

Sven Ulreich took his place. Manuel Neuer took on a new position in 2017-18. Following the retirement of German and Bayern legend Philipp Lahm, Germany and Bayern awarded the shot-stopper the captain’s armband.

Slew of Injuries

In the same season, an injury to the same left foot kept him out until January, and even then, he was just a substitute.

Working on his recovery and eager to regain his form, the new captain kicked off the 2018-19 season with a DFL-Supercup victory against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Aside from an exciting start to the season, things were not looking well for the Bavarian skipper. A ruptured muscle fiber forced him to miss six vital Bundesliga matches as the season came to a conclusion.

Neuer, a warrior at heart and a hungry player, was back for the DFB-Pokal against RB Leipzig. RB Leipzig’s dominance was no match for Germany’s No. 1.

Bayern’s 3-0 victory secured the club’s first domestic double under Neuer’s captaincy. The 2019-20 season is currently in progress. Bayern is in first place following an excellent second half of the 2019/2020 season.

The Bundesliga is a lot of fun, especially this season. Bayern’s league leaders, in particular, are at the top with a point differential of one. Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, and Borussia Mönchengladbach are all close behind.

Neuer, on the other hand, is hoping to extend his contract, which will keep him at the club until 2023. More information will be added as the season develops! Keep an eye out!

The Bayern captain’s career is far from over. I have yet to discuss his outstanding international career.

International Career

Neuer would go on to be an undisputed starter and a key component of Germany’s defense after watching Jens Lehmann’s and Edwin Van Der Sar’s outstanding goalkeeping methods and renewing the “Sweeper-Keeper” techniques.

He began his career with Germany’s U-21 team, making his debut against the Netherlands. Similarly, Germany won the UEFA European U-21 Football Championship in 2009 with a 4-0 victory over England.

The senior team was his next stop after a great performance. The German team was on the Asian Tour, and Neuer joined them, making his senior international debut against the UAE.

World-Cup Winner

The 2014 World Cup established Manuel Neuer as one of the top goalkeepers in history.

Anyone who witnessed the game would universally agree that Manuel Neuer’s performance was legendary. The only goalie worth watching was Germany’s number one.

While many would be concerned, if not mocked, by Neuer’s bravery in coming out of the goal, his teammates could operate freely. The shot-stoppers’ size and tremendous boldness in engaging opponents and purposefully missing chances were outstanding.

The Algerian game has been the most talked-about moment of the World Cup.

Moving on, the national team set a record by maintaining a clean sheet against Portugal, the United States, and France. 22 clean sheets in 50 outings is an impressive record.

The performance versus Argentina on July 13 will go on in history. Neuer faced off against the world’s finest player, Lionel Messi, and a very compact Argentina.

Although the outstanding goalie had to make difficult decisions and was frequently under pressure, he persisted, and his efforts were rewarded when Mario Götze scored in the 113th minute.

Germany’s number one is now a World Cup and Golden Gloves winner. In addition, Manuel Neuer completed more passes than any other player in the competition.

International

Furthermore, when competing in Euro 2016, the renowned goalie kept clean sheets till the round of 16. Finally, in the quarter-finals, Germany submits to Italy.

He broke Germany’s Sepp Maier’s previous record of 557 minutes without conceding. Nonetheless, all of the splendor was shattered during the 2018 World Cup.

Germany was eliminated from the group stage following crushing defeats to Mexico and South Korea. Regardless of the outcome, Manuel Neuer accepted responsibility for the defeat and pledged to return stronger.

The skipper has recently been training and regaining his form. The German is presently in Doha, attempting to improve the second half of the season while also preparing for the World Cup.

 Net Worth

Neuer has a staggering $40 million net worth as the unquestioned starter for the Bavarian club and the world’s greatest goalie. Neuer makes around $7.67 million each year. There is a different value system for athletes.

Unlike other celebrities, a player’s actual worth is determined by market valuation.

The German is 33 years old and has a market worth of $18 million. In addition, Bayern Munich paid Schalke’s €30 million release clause to secure Manuel Neuer’s services.

In particular, the Bayern goalkeeper set a career-high transfer market value of €45 million. Neuer was earning €75k per month at Schalke. In addition, the German skipper has made Adidas his official outfitter.

Controversy & Activism

Despite his accolades and accomplishments, Manuel Neuer is not without criticism. From his departure from Schalke to Bayern supporters’ protests against his signing, he had several contentious match moments during his career.

Nothing comes close to the competition between Germany’s number one and number two. Another standout goalkeeper is Barcelona’s dependable Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, who clashed with Neuer.

The rationale was mainly due to the former’s ambition to be ranked first in Germany. Despite Neuer’s 2018 injury and subsequent reinstatement as a starter in the World Cup, critics swiftly point to Manuel’s failure to prevent Germany’s humiliating departure.

Head coach Joachim Löw was also chastised for his poor decision-making. Another case saw him chastised for being gay, despite the fact that Neuer is married to his longtime lover Nina Weiss.

As it turns out, the German goalkeeper pushed homosexual athletes to come out, which inspired the general public to be more accepting of the LGBTQ population. Manuel is also a devout Catholic who believes in giving back to the community.

Aside from his football career, the German provided Frank McCay’s voice in the German version of Monsters University.

Relationship and Personal Life

Manuel Neuer married his longtime lover Nina Weiss. Ms. Neuer, Nina, is now a well-known artist who paints and teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
