Julia Archibald and Big Tiny Archibald, also known as Nate Archibald’s parents, welcomed Nathaniel “Tiny” Archibald into the world in New York City, New York.

He grew raised in the South Bronx of New York and was the second son of six kids. Within the glitzy city of New York is an area where gangs, guns, and violence are visible.

The two flying dreams are crushed to the ground as the very location gives rise to murders and drug sales as if nothing had happened.

Nate, on the other hand, was able to control everything and found solace in the basketball.

He started putting balls in the basket on a concrete, uneven playground as he grew older and into a teenager. One day, the tenacity he brought to school from his teenage years is broken.

Education

He had only played for his school’s squad for one and a half seasons throughout his time at DeWitt Clinton High School before being dismissed.

He had to run with the junior teams because he was a sophomore, which gave rise to the notion of giving up.

His two mentors at the time, Pablo Robertson and Floyd Layne were the ones who led the way in encouraging him.

To give an example, they were formerly the best at Loyola of Chicago and Harlem. Archibald gave basketball another shot as a result, and he was reinstated on the team.

The bashful Archibald was able to play a transition season at little Arizona Western College thanks to this, where he had previously excelled as a high school star with an average of 29.5 points per game.

He immediately started working on his studies and enrolled at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He played point guard for UTEP under the direction of legendary coach Don Haskins.

From 1967 to 1970, Archibald continued to pay attention to him, and this was heightened by his performance of 51 points in the 1970 Aloha Classic.

Professional Life and Career

Nate Archibald was picked by the Cincinnati Royals with the 19th overall choice in the second round of the 1970 NBA Draft after graduating from college.

Cleveland Indians vs. Kansas City Kings

With The City Kings, Archibald made his NBA debut against the New York Knicks, scoring 17 points and dishing out seven assists.

As a result, Archibald was the only player to win both the scoring and assist championships in the 1972–73 campaign.

Nate set an NBA record for a guard at the time of 34.0 points per game, which is still standing today.

In addition, Guy Rodgers surpassed him in the NBA record for assists with 910, setting a new mark. Nate was subsequently named the Sporting News NBA MVP.

Nets of New York

The Kings sent Archibald to the New York Nets due to some management issues on their team. He only played in 34 games for the team, though, since a foot ailment prevented him from contributing much.

Chicago Cubs

The Nets traded Archibald to the Buffalo Braves due to his ongoing injuries. He couldn’t, however, really participate in the games. He tore his Achilles tendon at the opening, which prevented him from participating in the games.

Celtics of Boston

Archibald was then moved by the Buffaloes to the Celtics, where he had a rocky debut. During his career, Archibald weighed 20 pounds too much. He was advised to cut weight, which benefited him the entire season.

In the 1980–81 NBA season, while a member of the Celtics, Archibald won his first and only league title while playing with rising sensation Larry Bird.

“There are other players who have had considerably greater careers than mine without ever taking home a trophy. When you consider players like Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing, you understand how fortunate you were to take home the trophy. Despite my ailments, I was able to keep studying the game. I managed the team that won the championship. It is a dream come true and something I will treasure for the rest of my life to do it with the Boston Celtics.”

Post-NBA

Nate Archibald earned his bachelor’s degree concurrently with his NBA career from the University of Texas-El Paso.

After his basketball career came to an end, Archibald started teaching in the public schools of New York City before moving on to Fordham University.

From Fordham University, Archibald received his master’s degree in 1990, then his professional diploma in administration and supervision.

Archibald also envisioned himself one day attending Fordham with a doctorate from California Coast University.

Overall, he abandoned it due to his inability to continue working on it due to a lack of resources and drive.

Additionally, when Nate was working with Texas-El Paso for two seasons, he also accepted a position as an assistant coach at the University of Georgia for one season.

Importantly, he has also served as a coach for several organizations, including the USBL’s New Jersey Jammers.

He has also served as an assistant coach in the National Basketball Development League. Not to add that in 2004 he served as the Long Beach Jam’s head coach.

Recognition and Highlights

In the NBA, where he had established himself as a long-term player, Archibald spent fourteen years of his life. We will briefly go over the career-high points and accomplishments.

In 1973, 1975, and 1976, Archibald was chosen for the All-NBA First Team three times, while in 1972 and 1981, he was chosen for the All-NBA Second Team twice.

He later participated in the NBA All-Star Game selection seven times, including when he was named the 1981 NBA All-Star Game MVP.

Nate Archibald had totaled 16,841 points (18.8 points per game) and 6,476 assists throughout his 876 professional games.

In addition, he three times led the NBA in free throws and was named to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time squad.

Relationship Status

Archibald, a former NBA player, was formerly wed to Shirley Dixon.

The only treatment available when Archibald became aware of his condition was a transplant because there was no known cure.

His doctors informed him of his predicament in the interim and said he was welcome to leave at any time.

Archibald then underwent cardiac rehabilitation before surgery and adhered to a rigorous diet. Nate recalls that

“I ingested their disgusting meal and took their horse medications. To me, it resembled shooting baskets. I was making an effort to relax. I wished for solitude.”

Archibald underwent surgery and received treatments over 26 days, and his recuperation went astonishingly well.
