Dennis was born in Trenton, New Jersey to his parents Shirley and Philander Rodman. His dad was an Air Force enlisted member, who later fought in Vietnam War. At a very young age, his father left him and his family and settled in the Philippines.

After completing high school, Rodman worked as an overnight janitor at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

College Career
Talking about Rodman’s Career he started his college career at Cooke County College. He averaged 17.6 points and 13.3 rebounds, before flunking out due to poor academic performance.
However, later he transferred to South Oklahoma State University, an NAIA school. In three seasons there (1983–1986), he averaged 25.7 points and 15.7 rebounds and secured a 63.7 field goal percentage.
In 1958 Rodman led his team to the NAIA semifinals where he scored 46 points in a single game. They finished the season with the highest ranking in history, at No. 3 in the nation.
This assisted him to join the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament where he won the Most Valuable honors. Moreover, Detroit Pistons got impressed by him in that season.

Detroit Pistons
Rodman was drafted by the Detroit Pistons as the third pick in the second round, joining the rugged team of coach Chuck Daly. Rodman fit perfectly well into their arsenal.
Pistons comfortably entered the 1987 playoffs by winning the 1987 playoffs. They defeated the Washington Bullets and easily beat the Atlanta Hawks in five games.
However, the Pistons bowed out in seven matches against the archrival Boston Celtics.
Pistons lost the 1988 NBA Finals by one point.
Pistons finally won their playoffs by defeating the Boston Celtics and winning in six games versus Chicago Bulls. They defeated the Lakers 4-0 in the 1989 NBA finals.
Pistons win back to back national championships in 1989 and 1990. Rodman took their “Bad Boy” personality to the international level.
Rodman finally established himself as the starting small of the Pistons. He played such strong defense that the NBA stated
” he could shut down any opposing player, from point guard to center”
Rodman established himself as a solid rebounder and significant defensive cog for the Pistons lineup. He earned NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 1990 and 1991.
He had a good relationship with his teammates and coach Daly. Rodman was heartbroken when a few of his friends transferred and Daly left the team. This forced them to change his mentality and he started the philosophy to play for money.

San Antonio Spurs
Rodman Signed a three-year contract with San Antonio Spurs. This brought him back to his home in Texas. Here he led the Spurs to the playoffs by carrying the league in rebounding in 1993, 1994, and 1995.
Moreover, Rodman now played as a power forward and won his third straight rebounding title. He averaged 17.3 boards per game, along with another All-Defensive Team call-up.
However, Rodman started showing inappropriate behavior:
- before the first game, he shaved his hair and dyed it blonde, which was followed up by stints with red, purple, and blue hair.
- He headbutted Stacey King and John Stockton.
- He refused to leave the hardwood once after being ejected and had a highly publicized two-month affair with Madonna.
Furthermore, the Spurs got eliminated from the first round of the 1994 playoffs and bowed out against the Utah Jazz in four games.
Chicago Bulls
Rodman was traded to the Chicago Bulls in 1995. Bulls were the dominant team in on1990. Even with the Bulls, Rodman didn’t quit his unconventional behavior. He appeared with the same look of red and green colorful hair. He got suspended for two weeks for headbutting a referee. Furthermore, Rodman got suspended again for 11 games after kicking a courtside TV photographer.
Though his teammates sometimes hated him for his behavior, Rodman was very important from the team’s point of view. The Bulls won the NBA title three years in a row, in 1996, 1997, and 1998.
The Bulls put Rodman in the spotlight. Rodman flourished the attention he got. Furthermore, his autobiography “Bad As I wanna be” was published in 1996. It was New York Times bestseller book for 20 weeks.

At the age of 38, Rodman joined Dallas Mavericks in 1999. Rodman played 12 games with Dallas. He got six technical fouls, was ejected twice, and faced a one-game suspension. Rodman ended his season averaging 14.3 rebounds per game.
Outside his NBA career, Rodman took a long break from basketball and concentrated on his film career and wrestling.
He returned to basketball and played with: Long Beach Jam (2003–2004), Fuerza Regia (2004), Orange County Crush (2004–2005), Tijuana Dragons (2005–2006), and Brighton Bears (2006).
On April 4, 2011, it was announced that Rodman was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
