Reggie Wayne, a former wide receiver best remembered for his tenure with the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League, is no longer active (NFL).

Wayne, meanwhile, has one Super Bowl victory, has been selected for six Pro Bowls, twice made the First Team of the 2010 All-Pros, and led the NFL in receiving yards in 2007. He was also selected for six Pro Bowls.

After playing college football for the University of Miami, Reggie was chosen by the Colts as the 30th overall pick in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft.

Wayne started for the Miami Hurricanes football team for four years during his undergraduate studies. He had 36 straight games with a reception, setting a school record with 173 career receptions.

Reggie is one of just five wide receivers in school history with a career total of 20 or more touchdowns.

Wayne set a freshman school mark for catches during the 1997 campaign with 47, which still stands today. He shared a dorm with future Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed and participated in track and field at his institution.

On March 24, 2011, during the University of Miami Hall of Fame’s 43rd Annual Induction Banquet, he was also admitted.

The Indianapolis Colts picked Wayne with the 30th overall choice in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft.

Reggie caught 27 catches for 345 yards and no touchdowns in his first season. Due to a severe ankle injury, he started nine games but missed three of them.

Reggie improved the next year, nearly doubling his output, catching 49 receptions for 716 yards and four touchdowns.

He made his debut in the 2003 campaign and caught 68 receptions for 838 yards and seven touchdowns.

Professional Background

2004 saw 12 touchdowns and 1210 yards from Wayne’s 77 receptions. With personal records and 184 yards on 11 receptions, he had four games with 100+ yards.

Reggie Wayne was also awarded the “Wild Card Weekend Offensive Player of the Week” following the Colts’ playoff victory over the Broncos.

His performance continued to improve, and in 2006 he agreed to a $39.5 million, six-year deal.

Due to his season-long performance, he was chosen for his first Pro-Bowl the same year.

With a 53-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter of Super Bowl XLI, Wayne, who had a standout playoff performance, assisted the Colts in defeating the Chicago Bears.

Although several of his teammates were still out with injuries during the 2007 campaign, he continued to put up strong performances, setting career highs in both catches and yards (1510 yards), both of which were at the time.

The NFL player also topped the league in receiving yards and was chosen for the Pro Bowl for the second time in two years.

Wayne hauled in 82 passes in 2008 for 1145 yards and six touchdowns. For the third year running, he was chosen for the Pro Bowl.

The San Diego Chargers defeated the Colts in overtime, but despite his 129-yard performance and a 72-yard touchdown in the wild-card round, they were ousted in the first round.

Pro-Bowl

Wayne participated in the infamous “4th and 2” game in 2009 when he grabbed the winning touchdown pass with 0:14 left during week 10’s matchup with the New England Patriots.

Although he was again chosen for the Pro Bowl, he was unable to take part since the Colts were involved in the Super Bowl. The Colts later suffered a 31-17 defeat against the New Orleans Saints.

Reggie once again put up impressive statistics in the 2010 campaign, finishing second in catches with 111, a career-best, and third in receiving yards with 1355.

Wayne made a name for himself as one of the league’s top receivers despite the Colts’ heavy reliance on Peyton Manning to win games.

He was also chosen as a starter for the Pro Bowl and established a team record by making 15 catches in a game against Jacksonville in the same season.

Reggie Despite Manning’s injury reducing Wayne’s production in 2011, he continued to lead the club in catches and receiving yards. Wayne joined the Colts on a three-year deal for the 2012 campaign.

His lowest AFC Offensive Player of the Week award came during the same season. He surpassed Art Monk to move up to the 12th spot on the NFL’s all-time catches list, breaking Crist Carter’s record of 59 games with three or more receptions in a row.

In terms of lifetime postseason receptions, Reggie moved up to second place behind Jerry Rice, but the Colts fell short against the Baltimore Ravens 24-9.

Wayne was chosen as the wide receiver for the 2012 All-Fundamentals Team for American football.

He was only the ninth player to accumulate 1000 receptions in a career during the 2013 campaign.

Up until he tore his season a week later when he was forced to miss the remainder of the season, he had the third-longest stretch of consecutive games for a wide receiver in NFL history.

In the 2014 season, Reggie Wayne surpassed 14,000 receiving yards, placing him in ninth place all-time in the NFL.

Wayne finished with franchise records for postseason receptions with 93, receiving yards, yards from scrimmage, and all-purpose yards with 1254, receiving and total touchdowns with 9, games with at least one touchdown with 8, and games with 100+ yards receiving with 3, a record he shares with T.Y. Hilton and Dallas Clark. Wayne only managed one catch in the Colts’ three postseason games because of injuries and his advancing age. 

The Indianapolis Colts made the decision not to re-sign Wayne on March 6, 2015, and on March 10 he became a free agent.

On August 24, 2015, Wayne and the New England Patriots agreed to a one-year deal for up to $3 million.

After missing the whole 2015 season, Reggie made his retirement announcement on January 15, 2016. Although delightful, the time has come. Give it some time.

Wayne concluded his NFL career at 24th in career touchdown reception receptions, 10th in career receiving yards, and 10th in career receptions.

Reggie ultimately retired in 2016 and is currently a voluntary coach.
