Aly Wagner is a former footballer and sports commentator. Aly won two Olympic gold medals in 2004 and 2008. Wagner also assisted her country in reaching the World Cup semifinals twice.

Wagner entered her first club when she was five years old. Aly was a member of the Santa Clara Valley Youth Football League’s Central Valley Mercury.

Again, Aly has also participated in a triathlon. Aly competed in the Wildflower Triathlon in 2005 after witnessing her brother Jeff compete in the sport.

Santa Clara Broncos

Aly began playing for Santa Clara in 1998 and has won several individual and team honors.

Wagner was called up to the United States Women’s National Team at the age of 18 in 1998. (USWNT).

Moreover, Aly was in her first year of playing for the Santa Clara Broncos. Aly played 23 games for the Broncos her rookie year, scoring 10 goals and adding 12 assists.

Her outstanding performance earned her the titles of WCC Freshman of the Year, First Team ALL-WCC, and Second Team NSCAA All-American. Lastly, She was also named The San Jose Mercury News player of the year.

Wagner then led the Broncos to the Women’s NCAA Championship triumph in 2001.

After an outstanding season in 2002, Aly was awarded the Hermann Trophy as the best collegiate player in the United States.

Club Career

Wagner was the first overall choice in the 2003 WUSA draft by the San Diego Spirit. Aly helped Spirit finish third in the WUSA season in her maiden season.

Besides, Aly was chosen to the All-WUSA Second Team following the season. At the end of the 2003 season, Aly was traded to the Boston Breakers. She made her Breakers debut on June 19, 2004, against the Washington Freedom.

Aly was traded to the French team Olympique Lyonnais after two years with the Boston Breakers. Moreover, Aly scored two goals in three Ligue 1 appearances. Due to injury, Aly was unable to play in any other games.

Additionally, She returned to the United States in 2009 to join the Los Angeles Sol of the Women’s Professional Soccer League.

Aly declared her retirement from football on January 14, 2010, due to chronic injury issues.

Broadcasting

Aly worked as the Chief Operating Officer of a plant food company after retiring from football. Regardless, Aly desired to return to the Sports World. So, Aly decided to pursue a career in broadcasting.

Again, The 2015 Women’s World Cup was Aly Wagner’s first major appearance as a soccer pundit.

Aly joined her old teammate Danielle Slaton at NBC Sports at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Aly has since done a fantastic job as a broadcaster covering several tournaments.
