He had 12 victories in his final season with the Sherbrooke after playing in the league for a few seasons.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Kent’s career with the Pirates lasted for almost five years until he made his major league debut in 1974. On May 20, 1974, he faced up against the Montreal Expos and pitched one inning with a hit but no runs.

It wasn’t until May 27 against the Padres that he earned his first win, but it was still his first.

He ultimately gave John Grubb a tie-breaking home run during the game. After that, the Charleston was given to him once more.

Kent remained with the Charleston through June 1975 because he just came home after it. His first major-league hit came on September 5 off Dale Murray of Montreal after he had played in 34 games for the season.

He also participated in the 1975 National League Championship Series matchup against the Reds.

His breakthrough came after these seasons when he was recognized as one of the best pitchers in the Pirates’ bullpen.

He had apparently played in 14 games and had a 1.64 ERA. However, if we consider all 64 of his games, he had a 2.45 ERA and nine saves.

Additionally, Kent worked for Chuck Tanner after the Pirates’ previous manager was fired.

As Tekulve consistently received a late call when the game was on the line, things became difficult for him. After a season, Tekulve was promoted to closer, threw 91 games, and recorded 31 saves.

For reliever Al Holland and a minor leaguer, Kent was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies on April 20, 1985.

On April 29 versus Montreal, he earned the team’s first victory. He played three seasons as a closer for the Phillies.

He also set a record for the oldest pitcher in the league in terms of appearances. Kent made 90 appearances by the time his time with the organization came to an end.

Kent Tekulve left the Phillies after the 1988 campaign because they did not extend his contract.

Cincinnati Reds

Kent decided to participate in spring training as a nonroster player with the Cincinnati Reds out of all the teams who were interested in him.

He so agreed to a one-year contract with the squad that intended to maintain him as John Franco’s setup man.

Kent, however, played for the squad in just 37 games before retiring on July 17, 1989.
