Who is Mary Kom? Childhood, Parents, Education, and Nationality

Mary Kom was born on March 1, 1983, in Kangathei, India, to Tonpa Kom and Akham Kom.

Besides, Kom was from a low-income household, and both of her parents were tenant farmers in Jhum fields.
Similarly, Kom grew up on the farm with her parents and progressively mastered athletics in school.

Furthermore, When Mary’s father was younger, he was an avid wrestler. Later, Kom began to learn boxing as well.

Mary started her training in Imphal with her first coach, K. Kosana Meitei. However, Mary left her birthplace at the age of 15 to attend the Sports Academy in the state capital of Imphal.

Similarly, Mary’s instructor, Meitei, told the BBC that she remembers Kom as an industrious and dedicated kid with strong resolve who swiftly grasped the fundamentals of boxing.

Further, Mary afterward trained with Manipur State Boxing Coach M. Narjit Singh at Khuman Lampak in Imphal. Moreover, Mary kept her desire to pursue boxing a secret from her father, an ex-wrestler.

Also, Her Father, on the other hand, found out about her after seeing a photograph of her in a newspaper after she won the 2000 State Boxing Championship. And, Three years later, Kom’s father began to encourage her boxing passion.

Additionally, Mary earned a silver medal in the 2008 Asian Women’s Boxing Championships in India and her fourth consecutive gold medal at the 2008 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in China.

Likewise, Mary also won gold medals in the 2010 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Barbados and the Asian Women’s Boxing Championship in Kazakhstan.

World Championships

Maru earned the first gold medal of her career on October 1, 2014, at the 2014 Asian Games in South Korea, defeating Kazakhstan’s Zhaina Shekerbekova.

Furthermore, Kom won her fifth gold medal on November 8, 2017, in the Asian Boxing Confederation women’s boxing championships in Vietnam.

Moreover, Mary became the first woman in history to win six titles during the 10th AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.
