He had 70 tackles and two interceptions while starting 12 games in his second year in college.

Obi made 88 tackles and two interceptions the next season. In the end, during his final season with the Huskies, he started every game, finished with 118 tackles, and had four interceptions.

NFL career

The NFL player received an invitation to the Senior Bowl, a postseason college football all-star game that features the top NFL Draft prospects.

He improved his draft prospects throughout training and had three combined tackles while a member of the North team. Melifonwu pleased the recruiters.

He also attended the NFL Combine to finish his positional training. Obi excelled in other drills despite skipping the three-cone and short shuttle.

In addition, Mike Mayock, an NFL expert, and NFLDraftScout.com ranked him as the fourth-best strong safety in the 2017 draft.

A career with the New England and Oakland Raiders

In the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders selected Melifonwu. However, after getting hurt, the Raiders put him on the injured list.

In 2018, the Oakland team released him and put him on the injured list. He was eventually released by the Raiders on October 23, 2018.

Obi left his last NFL team after a lackluster stint there and joined another one. The football player signed a two-year contract with the New England Patriots in less than a month.

He reached the Super Bowl’s championship game after recording three tackles in the two games he played.

Melifonwu won Super Bowl LIII alongside the New England Patriots club. The Patriots team won the championship by defeating the Los Angeles Rams.

But the Patriots released him and then re-signed him to the practice squad. On April 27, 2020, Obiajulu was let go despite having a future deal with the team.

Furthermore, On January 4, 2021, he parted ways with the Patriots and agreed to a reserve/future contract with the San Francisco 49ers.
