Robert Covington

NBA player Robert Covington represents the Los Angeles Clippers. He is an American. Before moving up to the NBA, he played college basketball for the Tennessee State Tigers. In 2012, while playing there, he was selected for the First Team All-OVC.

Robert Covington was conceived in Bellwood, Illinois, on December 14, 1990. Dennis Bryant’s mother Teresa married him when he was still quite young.

Robert was raised in the Hillside, Illinois, region by his stepfather Dennis. His biological father’s identity is also a mystery.

Dennis also loved Covington as if he were his son, and Covington rapidly connected to his stepfather. Devon Bryant and Dennis Jr., two younger brothers, were later born to his mother.

Later, both of his younger brothers started playing sports and competed in high school and college soccer.

Early on, Dennis was aware of his kids’ physical prowess and frequently took them outside to engage in various sports. Covington started showing a strong interest in basketball during this time.

His parents promised him that if he kept playing well, he could become a great athlete. He grew up in a very warm and welcoming home.

It was not, however, as simple as it appeared. In his early years, Robert was quite underweight, and the community was full of children who had extraordinary talent and were generally more skilled than he was.

Dennis, however, did not allow him to give up. He joined the AAU team in Illinois with coach Kevin Dockery after being cut from the teams at his elementary and middle schools.

He showed significant progress as a player over time, eventually making the basketball team at Proviso West High School. Though he could have given up long ago if not for his father’s inspiration.

And after finishing his studies at Proviso in 2009, he enrolled at Tennessee State University (TSU) in Nashville to continue his education.

The Texas State University awarded Covington a bachelor’s degree in exercise science.

Professional Life and Career

Robert plays high school basketball for Proviso West High School in his hometown in addition to attending and participating in it.

He didn’t play for the school team during his junior year, even though initially he didn’t have anything special.

Fortunately, he went through a growth spurt in his first year of high school, which had a big impact on his game.

He was already really good at making jump shots, but as time went on, he also got better at passing and defending.

Additionally, he had been able to enhance his skills thanks to the AAU’s regular practice sessions.

His leadership helped his squad win the West Suburban Championship in 2009. In his final year, he scored 18.0 points and grabbed 11.0 rebounds per game.

Career in College

Robert Covington chose to enroll in Tennessee State University and choose the scientific program after finishing high school.

Even though his favorite course required a lot of time, he excelled in both basketball and his studies.

Covington averaged 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while playing all 32 games in his first campaign. He won various awards for his achievements during his debut season.

Robert improved as a small forward even more as a sophomore, recording eight double-doubles for the season. He averaged 13.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in his second season.

Comparable to his two outstanding prior seasons, his last two collegiate seasons were wildly successful.

However, he regrettably missed about ten games during his senior season because of an injury.

Professional Background

Covington was passed over by NBA scouts in 2013 despite having a successful career with the Tennessee State Tigers.

On July 15, 2013, he did, however, sign a deal with the Houston Rockets, and that same day, he was sent straight to the NBA D-Rio League’s Grande Valley Vipers.

He attracted the attention of NBA analysts through NBA D-League games. He won Rookie of the Year honors that season with an average of 23.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game (2014).

On November 15, 2014, he agreed to a five-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers following that campaign.

Over the years, Covington made a name for himself as one of the NBA’s top small forwards by consistently playing terrific basketball.

Up until the 2017–18 season, he played for the 76ers for four consecutive seasons.  In addition, he was also setting impressive defensive records.

He played for the 76ers for 13 games in the 2018–19 season before being moved to the Minnesota Timberwolves. His time with the Timberwolves was marked by numerous wounds.

He was injured in his knee after a few games, and it took him a while to recuperate while sitting on the sidelines. Later, the team temporarily transferred him to the Iowa Wolves.

Unfortunately, before he could make a comeback in the next season, his knee ailment worsened.

He only appeared in 48 games for the Timberwolves in the 2019–20 season as a result of his numerous game absences.

Earlier this year, on February 4, 2022, he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. Before it, he played for the Portland Trail Blazers and the Rockets, two teams that had members of his last team, the Rockets.

Covington recently talked openly about the mental health issues he experienced in the past.

After becoming hurt while playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the early part of 2018, he was on the verge of quitting the sport entirely.

He added that he generally preferred to be alone and shunned others in his vicinity.

However, he sought advice from the church and hired a specialist, which allowed him to later make a full recovery.

Additionally, he expresses gratitude to Ryan Saunders, the former Timberwolves coach, for helping him get through those dark times.

When he felt like he was at the lowest point of his life, all he needed was somebody to talk to and comfort him.

Along with sharing his own experience, he advised others to start talking about anxiety and despair and to take mental health issues seriously.
