Alex O’Loughlin is an Australian actor, writer, director, and producer best known for his role in the CBS remake of Hawaii Five-0 as Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett. He starred in the films Oyster Farmer and The Back-up Plan, as well as the television series Moonlight and Three Rivers.

O’Loughlin began his acting career in Australia, starring in the TV show “The Invisible Man” and the film “Oyster Farmer.” He then moved to the United States in 2005. He appeared in several American TV shows and films, including “Moonlighting,” “Three Rivers,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “The Back-up Plan,” “The Invisible Man,” and “August Rush.”

CBS announced in August 2008 that O’Loughlin would star in a TV series created by author Mark Gordon, but the show never aired.

In the April 2009 episode of Criminal Minds, “The Big Wheel,” he played Vincent Rowlings, an OCD-ridden serial killer. CBS cancel Three Rivers in December 2009. O’Loughlin appeared alongside Jennifer Lopez in the 2010 romantic comedy film The Back-up Plan.

CBS announced on March 2, 2012, that O’Loughlin would miss some episodes of Hawaii Five-0 to seek drug treatment for pain management medication prescribed following a shoulder injury. He was scheduled to miss at least one episode of the second season.

The non-profit Australians in Film, based in Los Angeles, announced in August 2013 that O’Loughlin would be honored with a Breakthrough Award at a ceremony on October 24, 2013, in Los Angeles.
