One of the greatest skaters of all time is German-born Ukrainian Aljona Savchenko. Over the years, she has skated with a variety of different partners, but one aspect of her performance has remained constant.

The ice queen has won one gold medal at the Olympics and several international championships.

Aljona’s life has been intriguing. The skater, who was born in Ukraine, relocated to Germany just for skating.

About Aljona Savchenko |  Family and Education

Aljona Savchenko was born in the Ukrainian city of Obukhiv, which is close to Kyiv, the country’s capital.

At the age of five, Aljiona learned how to skate. In the USSR, figure skating was a prominent sport that she and her parents followed on television.

One year she requested a set of skates for her birthday, and her father took her skating on a frozen lake.

Her entry into sports was facilitated by the fact that her father is a well-known weightlifter. She began pair skating, albeit, much later.

She was 13 years old when she was seduced by the elegant displays of pair skating.

Although Aljona is now well-known in skating, things weren’t always like this. She first took a bus from her house to Kyiv every day since she could not pay the rent for an apartment in the city.

Apart from one piece of clothing and one set of skates, the Ukrainian officials did not spend much on the skaters. Her sewing was done at the expense of every other customer.

Professional Life and Career

In the 1998 World Junior Championships, Aljona’s first partner was Dmytro Boyenko, with whom she finished in 13th place.

After that, she and her new partner Stanislav Morozov won the 2000 World Junior Championship.

The duo twice won the national championship of Ukraine. She left Ukraine for Germany after the 2002 Olympics because she was dissatisfied with the lack of support given to skaters there.

Establishing Oneself in Germany

She worked with Robin Ziolkowski, with whom she enjoyed a fruitful and extended collaboration.

The team won nine German National Championships, five World Championships, and four Grand Prixs (2007, 2010, 2011, and 2013). (2009-2014, except for 2010).

When Zolkowsky retired, she worked with Frenchman Bruno Massot. Unfortunately, a pair is not allowed to compete under two different flags by the ISU.

Bruno chose to compete for Germany in October 2015, and the French Figure Skating Federation banned him for his decision (FFSG).

The duo won three times at the German Nationals, the World Championship in 2018, and the Olympics in 2018. (2016,2018).

After winning the world title, they announced a protracted break from the sport.

After that, they declared that they will not be participating in the competition again on April 1, 20201.

The champion appeared to have given up skating forever, but to everyone’s amazement, a new statement was made in June.

Savchneko decided to come out of retirement and compete once more, this time for the United States figure skating.

She informed her happy admirers of the news on social media.

Olympics

Aljona has already competed in 5 Olympics, making him an Olympic veteran. In 2002 Salt Lake City, she competed in her first Olympics with partner Morozov, finishing 15th overall.

Moreover, She had already relocated to Germany and obtained German citizenship by the time of the 2006 Olympics.

Together with Robin Szolkowky, her new partner, she competed in the Olympics in Turin, where they placed sixth.

The duo scored 75.96 at the 2010 Olympics, which was a personal best for them. They took home a bronze medal. However, they had to settle for another bronze medal at the 2014 Olympics.

Finally, Aljona participated in the 2018 Olympics alongside Bruno Massot, a new partner.

With a time of 159.31 on February 15, 2018, the duo broke the previous free skating record. Aljona became one of the oldest women to win an Olympic gold medal as they ultimately won gold medal.

Shows

Throughout her career, Aljona has frequently participated in ice skating performances. Most notably, she has participated in art on ice 12 times in Switzerland.

Along with performing in shows like “Opera on Ice,” “Hit on Ice,” and “Plushenko and Friends” in Italy, she has also taken part in shows like “Music on Ice” in Switzerland, “Emotions on Ice” in Germany, and “All that Skate” in Korea.

The two represented the recently established “Holiday in Ice Academy” in 2018. They were the featured visitors during that year’s Holiday on Ice: Showtime.

Due to Alijona’s pregnancy, the pair was unable to skate throughout the spring of 2018 and the summer of 2019. But she was out on the rink once again in December 2019.

Lastly, On vacation on ice in Hamburg in February 2020, the duo made a triumphant return.

Coaching

Many young skaters who were developing their skills received assistance from the great skater. In her off-season, she led the German national team.

Additionally, from May to October 2018, she mentored American pair skaters, Chris Knierim and Alexa Scimeca Knierim.

Aya Hatakawa, whom she also coached in 2019, went on to win the German Novice Nationals in 2019 and silver medals in the Junior and Senior Nationals in 2020.

Relationship Status

In 2016, Savchenko wed her longtime partner Liam Cross. Liam is an illustrator and artist. They have a charming love story that inspires hope in everyone.

Liam, who is originally from England, relocated to Germany in 2012 to find employment.

One day, he received an invitation to a poker game, where he met Aljona Savchneko. He did not know skating or Aljona, though.

Communication between the two wasn’t excellent in the beginning.

Both Liam and Aljona struggled with their German and English, respectively. They even attempted using sign language to communicate.

Liam was shocked and terrified to find that Aljona had previously competed in the 4 Olympics. At the time, Liam was employed by the military and questioned why she would be interested in him.

Beyond a proposal

However, the link seemed obvious! Liam proposed after only six months of dating. Although he felt a little anxious, his mother soothed him.

According to reports, his father had married his mother for 27 years after proposing to her after six months of courting.

So he did what seemed right and asked her to marry him. When he attempted to purpose the first time, he chickened out, and things did not turn out as expected.

But he worked up the guts to do it again while keeping it straightforward. Aljona concurred fully, as well.
