Amanda was born on 20 February 1929 in Buffalo in New York in the USA. Her birth name was Beverly Louise Neill. Her parents were Jesse and Louise (née Puckett) Neill and she was their only child. Her father worked as a banker.

Her most well-known role was that of Miss Kitty a saloon owner in Gunsmoke which was aired from 1955 to 1974. She then married Mark Edward Spaeth on 28 April 1984 and she was widowed on 27 May 1985 when Mark died.
