Jason Scott Lee is an American actor and martial artist. He gained fame for playing the title role in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story in 1993. He was also portrayed in the main role in Mowgli in Disney’s adaptation of The Jungle Book.
Jason Scott Lee was born on 19 November 1966 in Huntington Beach, CA. He, however, was raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father Robert Lee was of Hawaiian and Chinese descent, while his mother Sylvia Lee had Chinese roots. He has a younger brother and an older sister. He has no relation with Bruce Lee or Bruce Lee’s son Brandon Lee.
He studied at Pearl City High School. He had a keen interest in acting while at school. He is an alumnus of Fullerton College. He attended extracurricular classes under acting coach Sal Romeo.
Jason is deeply influenced by his parents. He had once said:
“My mother’s compassion and my father’s tenacity were two things that combined in me,”
He also studied hula dancing.
Jason Scott Lee’s career
After his graduation, Jason Scott Lee applied and got the first role of an Asian immigrant in 1987 in Born in East LA. Few more opportunities came his way in his career but they were not many primarily due to prejudice against Asian people in Hollywood at that time. In 1989, he starred in Back to the Future Part II. He then bagged the role of an Eskimo in Map of the Human Heart.
During the auditioning for The Last of the Mohicans, he was spotted by a casting director. This director recommended him for the audition for the Bruce Lee new film. He cleared the screen test and rest is history!
Jason was nominated in 1994 for the MTV Movie Award for this role. Jason took some martial art training for this film but he told in a later interview:
“I remember being on my knees weeping for days and wondering how I was going to pull this off,”
He had no formal martial arts training but learned Jeet Kune Do regularly. He has turned a certified instructor under Jerry Poteet who is a former student of Bruce Lee.
Jason Scott Lee later also appeared in the adventure film Rebellion in Paradise where he had the main role. He was also cast in Rapa Noi in 1994. In 1998, he was seen in Soldier. In 2000, he also did the musical ‘The King and I’. He also does voice-over and voiced the character of David Kawena in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch.
He also added his voice to the documentary film The Slanted Screen which was released in 2006. He also did a supporting role in the comedy film of 2007 called Balls of Fury. In 2016, he has played roles in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Sword of Destiny. He is also set to star in Disney’s Mulan, set to be released in 2020.

Jason Scott Lee is a married man. His marriage took place in September 2008 and his wife is public relations professional. Diana is from Singapore and Jason had met her there during his film shoot. The wedding was solemnized at Our Lady of the Mount Church in Pearl City. Jason’s mother resides there.
It was attended by a great number of Hollywood stars and his close friends and relatives. In January 2010, Diana was expecting and gave birth to a daughter. It is not known whether he has more children after that. He was previously dating dancer Carrie Ann Inaba in 1994.
