Lola Van Wagenen was born in December 1938 in Provo, Utah, the USA. She was brought up in a Mormon family and in later life had also gone on to explore other philosophical and religious beliefs.

There is no information related to Lola Van Wagenen’s parents and siblings if any. She did her higher studies later in life many years after she had married actor Robert Redford. She did her bachelor’s degree from Vermont College in 1982. In 1984, she completed her Master’s degree in Public History from New York University. Lola Van Wagenen completed her Ph.D. in American History from NYU in 1994. She did her post-doctoral after her divorce with Redford.

Lola Van Wagenen shot to limelight when she married actor Robert Redford in 1958. She has been the executive producer of several movies. Her doctoral dissertation was published in a book named Sister-Wives and Suffragists: Polygamy and the Politics of Woman Suffrage 1870- 1896. She also wrote a brilliant article titled ‘In Their Own Behalf: The Politicization of Mormon Women and the 1870 Franchise.’
In 1970, when still married to Redford, Lola started the Consumer Action For Now (CAN). This non-profit organization was based in New York City and had consumer-oriented and environment-related educational programs. She co-chaired it for 10 years. The group also taught consumers how their buying habits could affect the environment. She conducted a number of public-speaking programs locally as well as on national TV. She also organized an Environment Action forum in 1972. Lola also organized a political action Council which advocated and pushed for the passage of Toxic Substances Control Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act They were successfully passed in 1976.

For three years (1970-1973), the CAN newsletter was also published and reached countrywide. Lola wrote articles in it and also conducted a lot of research related to the environment. She also developed The Sun Fund in order to support the raising of awareness for conservation and energy and for the use of alternative sources of energy. She also did a Solar Energy Slide Show and in 1978 organized a SunDay in NY.
In 1979 and 1980, Lola was in the forefront for organizing an educational project on energy for women. She also published a handbook for them. In 1979, she was conferred with the Honorary Doctorate in Science by Pratt University for her enormous role in increasing the awareness of energy conservation and the use of alternative sources of fuel and energy.
Lola formed the Clio Visualizing History, Inc., with historian Jeanne Houck to promote American history. She could arrange funds for one film which was made and named Miss America: A Documentary Film. She could make smaller projects but larger ones had to be shelved due to lack of funds. They then went into more video making and arranging interactive sessions.

Lola met Robert Redford in 1957 in LA. They had a secret wedding in Las Vegas, Nevada a few months before that had a public one on 12 September 1958 in Provo, Utah. They had 4 children; daughter Amy Redford, son James Redford, daughter Shauna Redford and another son Scott Anthony Redford. They divorced in 1985. Lola married George Burrill on 17 July 2002. He was the Honorary Consul from New Zealand to Vermont.
