Pre-fame and childhood
Daya’s full name is Grace Martin Tandon. She was born on 24 October 1998 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was raised in Mount Lebanon suburb in Pennsylvania. It was her Punjabi Indian grandfather who migrated to the US from New Delhi. Her parents are Hans and Christine Tandon. She has 4 sisters- Rachel, Mariana, Celia, and Avery.
Daya had this to tell about her family-
“Both of my parents are engineers. I had a family band going for a second with my four sisters, but it didn’t last very long.”
She was at the St. Bernard School and later switched to Mt. Lebanon High School, She was interested in music and hence at the age of 3, she began learning piano. When she became 11, she started learning about jazz piano. Besides piano, she started learning other musical instruments as well which included guitar, ukulele, saxophone, and flute.
At the young age of 11, she also joined Accelerando Music Conservatory, owned by Christina Chirumbolo. This was in her hometown and it was here that she had the chance to meet songwriter and producer Gino Barletta. He and Chirumbolo started a music camp and Daya was invited in 2015 to join it.
Daya Fame and career
Daya migrated to LA with her parents and started working with Chirumbolo and Barletta. She did songwriting and she wrote her first single at that time. She was introduced to Steve Zap of Z Entertainment. She showed him her song Hide Away. Zap liked her song and became keen to promote her career.
Daya released her song in 2015 and it soon became a hit. It gained a lot of fans especially online. Blogger Prez Hilton said:
“There is something very special about Daya’s voice”.
She was Elvis Duran’s Artist of the Month and appeared on TV. She was also seen on Today.
After this initial success, Daya started concentrating on her EP. It was self-titled and contained 6 songs. It was released in September 2015. It again appeared on Billboard’s top 200.
She also got offers to do opening acts for Pop rap duo Jack and Jack’s US Tour. She also was featured in songs of other fellow singers such as Chainsmokers.
In 2016, she also got an invitation to perform at the White House Easter Egg Roll and it was here that she was honored to meet President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.
She released few songs of her debut studio album. She was also nominated for the 2016 Grammy Awards and won it in 2017. Her discography until now has been very impressive.
Talking about her feelings, Daya said:
“I feel like I’ve been living in a dream for the past year and I’m going to wake up tomorrow and have to go to school or college like all my friends are.”

She has no children. She is not dating any boyfriend now but had been in relationships before. She had once said in an interview:
“I am still very independent in my real life, and that’s why I’m always trying to get out of relationships prematurely. Which I think this song speaks to, because I’m regretting that I moved on so quickly from this person, and realizing that they could have been a really impactful part of my life.”
She also admitted that it is difficult to maintain relationships in the industry and with her career.
