Avi is a Jewish and was bullied in his childhood at school as well as in the community. Elaborating how he coped with the bullying, Avi said:

“I was made fun of a lot for being Jewish. And I just feel like anyone that is made fun of shouldn’t be for being different. At first, it really hurt me. But eventually I began to get used to it and found out that the best thing was not to let it bother me. For anyone who is getting picked on, just ignore it. As cliché as that is, it’s the best thing.”

Avi Kaplan was raised in Visalia but later moved to Upland in California in 2007 in order to be able to go to attend Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, AC. Avi had an inclination towards folk music right from his young days and would frequent the Sequoia National Park near his house. He was inspired by the music there. Talking about his time with Pentatonix, Avi had said:

“My favorite part is being able to live my dream with people who share the same dream as me. We are definitely like family,”

In early 2017, he left the band. He announced on Facebook,

“…This morning, I announced that I will be taking a step back from PTX.

I’ve struggled with this decision a lot…I want you all to know that the past 6 years have been the most unbelievable years of my life…

I believe one of the big reasons why we have been so successful and accomplished all that we have is because of the unbelievably fast pace that we keep. Throughout my journey with PTX, this pace has always been a struggle for me. It’s been hard for me not to be with my family and friends when I need them or when they need me. It’s been hard to not be able to escape into nature when I’m feeling overwhelmed or just need some time to myself.

…I just know that I can no longer continue at this pace and so I have to do what’s best for the group and I have to do what’s best for me.

I do want you all to know that I’m still going to be doing music and I’m going to be doing it with my whole heart. I will ALWAYS do my best to lift others up with my voice. I hope that you’ll all support my decision and that you can understand where I’m coming from…

I love you all deeply and I thank you for everything. Truly.

Avi.”
