Anais Nin is an American essayist, diarist, novelist and a writer of short stories and erotica. During her lifetime, she was called ‘a monster of self-centeredness whose artistic pretensions now seem grotesque’. She was an oddity because she wrote extensively and explicitly on sex from a female point of view.

There were frank portrayals of illegal abortions, extramarital affairs, and incest. These might seem fair and brave in 2015 but back then it was career suicide. Hence she could never gain mainstream success. However, due to the internet, her work and quotes became hits.

One of her personal friends said:

“They give people the sense that Anaïs was a philosopher. The internet has sort of turned her around.”

Anais’ first work was a critical evaluation of D.H.Lawrence which she titled ‘D.H.Lawrence: An unprofessional study’. Her interest in psychoanalysis rose and she studied it in depth with Rene Allendy and Otto Rank. Talking about Otto, she had said:

“As he talked, I thought of my difficulties with writing, my struggles to articulate feelings not easily expressed. Of my struggles to find a language for intuition, feeling, instincts which are, in themselves, elusive, subtle, and wordless.”

In 1939, she left France and returned to NY. In her diaries, Guiler’s does not find mention and it is said that it was his wish to be not written about. In NY, she moved in with Otto and started seeing patients as well which she quit later.

Her work includes her diaries and her journals in which she has made a detailed description of her relationships with the varied males she met. She had intimate relationships with them and this is taken as a counterbalancing work. Her work has been published in 16 journals.
