Bennet Omalu is a Nigerian-American forensic pathologist, physician, and neuropathologist. He discovered and published the findings of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in American football players. Currently, he is working as a professor at the University of California, Davis, Department of medical pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

She was born on September 30, 1968, in Nnokwa, Idemili South, Anambra State, Nigeria. He is currently 50 years old. He holds dual citizenship, Nigerian and American. He is the sixth of seven siblings. He was born at the time of the Nigerian Civil War which leads his family to flee from their home. The family returned after two years of his birth.

His father was a community leader in Enugu-Ukwu and a civil mining engineer. Her mother was a seamstress. His family name ‘Omalu’ is a short form of ‘Onyemalukwube’ which means ‘he who knows, speak’.

He started to attend primary school at the age of three and succeed in the entrance of the Federal Government College Enugu for secondary school. Later, he attended medical school at the age of 16 at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He graduated from there with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery(MBBS) in June 1990. After that, he did a clinical internship and did service work doctoring in the highland city of Jos for three years.

He became disappointed with Nigeria after the inconclusive election of a presidential candidate in which Moshood Abiola could not win the Nigerian presidency. Then he planned to study in the USA and searched for the scholarship. In 1994, he made his way to Seattle, Washington to compete for an epidemiology fellowship at the University of Washington. Later, he left New York City and joined Columbia University’s Harlem Hospital Center in 1995 and took a residency training program in anatomic and clinical pathology.

After that,  he trained as a forensic pathologist and board certifications. Later, he received fellowships in pathology in 2000 and neuropathology in 2002 through the University of Pittsburgh. Then, he received a Master of Public Health(MHP) in epidemiology in 2004 from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. He achieved a Master of Business Administration(MBA) from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University in 2008.

He worked as a chief medical examiner of San Joaquin County, California from 2007 to 2017. He later resigned after accusing the country’s Sheriff, who repeatedly interfered with the death investigations to protect law enforcement officers who took the lives of people.
