She was born on October 13, 1952, in Buffalo, New York, USA. She is currently 66 years old. Her mother’s name is Gloria Johnson and she was a surgical technician. Her father’s name is unknown but he was known to be an electrician. She joined Bennett High School and graduated from there in 1969. She studied criminal justice at Northeastern University.

She was gawky and tall as a child. According to her, her sister was far more beautiful. She was very much interested in sports which include swimming. At an early age, she won several swimming competitions and she nearly made the U.S. national team in the 100 years freestyle which was for the 1968 Summer Olympics in  Mexico City, Mexico.

She gave up her studies and focused on modeling. She left her studies at Northeastern University and made her way to New York City. Her initial phase of modeling was very difficult. She auditioned for the famous Ford modeling agency, but she was not selected. Later, she turned to a modeling agency named ‘Black Beauty’, that specialized in African-American models. But the company also rejected her.

She worked as a fashion model since 1971. She went into the office of ‘Glamour Magazine’ and she was immediately hired for the shoot. She made her appearance in ‘Glamour’ in 1971 and started working steadily. However, she was told to lose some weight and she weighed about 135 pounds at that time and reduced to 103 pounds. She appeared on the cover of the magazine five more times over the next two years. Modeling is a normal career in the US but she rose to fame after appearing on the cover of ‘American Vogue’, she became the first African-American model to appear on the cover of the magazine. She appeared on the cover in 1974 and appeared on the cover of ‘French Elle’ in 1975. After that, fashion designers started using African-American models on their covers.

She became an in-demand magazine model. She also appeared in one of the leading magazines named ‘Cosmopolitan and Essence’.  She has made her appearance on more than 500 magazine covers and numerous advertising campaigns. She worked for designer Halston as a runaway model.

She had performed a role in a commercial for national Airlines in which she sang, ‘Come On and Fly Me’. Also, she appeared in print ads for Virginia Slims cigarettes and she was a spokesperson for Avon cosmetics.

She was quoted by the Vogue magazine as,

“Becoming the first African American to grace the cover of Vogue magazine in August 1974 was a historical movement in time, the color barrier was broken .”

She was regarded as the most successful African-American female model in the mid-1970s.

She said to Newsweek,

“I see the inspiration of black women being lifted up all over when they look at me and that’s a super feeling.”

She became even more successful after signing with the Ford agency. Beverly Johnson became one of the highest-paid models in the industry. She received an amount of $100 per hour for advertising work and $125 per hour for editorial modeling.

She told to the New York Times Magazine,

“I’ve in the business for four years. There’s not a model, black or white, who’s done what I’ve done in such a short time. It’s so, and I think I should say it.”

She did not limit herself as a  model. She started her second career as an actress and became an advocate for several social issues.

Beverly Johnson’s Husband, Daughter

She married Billy Potter in 1971 but the couple could not hold the relationship and separated in 1974.

Then, she started dating music producer, Danny Sims, and married on May 8, 1977. The couple welcomed a sweet little daughter, Anansa Sims on December 27, 1978. But, they also decided to end their relationship and got divorced in 1979.

Also, she was in a long-term relationship with actor Chris Noth.
