When he was 3, his family migrated to Oakland, CA. His family was economically not well-off bu just scrapped through for food and shelter.

He had multiple arrests as a teenager for vandalism and gun possession. He faced racism in California. He wrote on this experience in his autobiography:

“During those long years in Oakland public schools, I did not have one teacher who taught me anything relevant to my own life or experience. Not one instructor ever awoke in me a desire to learn more or to question or to explore the worlds of literature, science, and history. All they did was try to rob me of the sense of my own uniqueness and worth, and in the process nearly killed my urge to inquire.”

After studying at  Oakland Technical High School in 1959 he joined Merritt College. In 1966, he obtained his associate degree in Arts. He later attended San Francisco Law School and University of California at Santa Cruz. He got his bachelor’s degree and in 1980 procured his Ph.D. He said:

“Most of all, I questioned what was happening in my own family and in the community around me.”

He soon joined the civil rights movement which was sweeping the USA at that time.

The making of his own Political Party

Huey was drawn into politics in his college days. He used to lead many social issues at the college. He read the works of the world’s great leaders and after meeting Bobby Seale, he formed his Black Panther Party in October 1966. This party aimed to work for self-defense for African-Americans in the US. The party had a great role in the 1960s and 1970s and was deeply associated with the Black Power movement. Their ten-point program listed education, jobs, and better housing for the colored race in the USA.

The Party believed that a little force is mandatory for a social change and used to resort to violence for it. He toured and visited all those places where the Africans frequented and gave lectures and speeches to them in order to empower them. But the violence was often wrongly used by his party people leading them to fall into disfavor with both the white and the colored communities.

There were some good activities seen from the Party such as the setting up of schools and  Free Breakfast for Children Program.  Martial arts training was also provided. He was in support of Palestinian independence.

When he was accused of money embezzlement, he disbanded his party and after been trialed was sentenced to 6 months of prison term and 18 months probation.
