American rapper Snoop Dogg announced this week that he was endorsing London Breed for the post of Mayor of San Francisco. He tweeted on 8 March 2018:

“I’m standing with the women of #ItsOurTimeSF because its time an accomplished woman led the city # It’s OurTime #London4Mayor,”

He also uploaded a video that shows the previous Mayors of SF from 1850 to 2018. Most of them were white and all men. The videotext read:

“168 years. 44 mayors. 1 woman. That was then. This is NOW.”

Snoop Dogg was born as Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. on 20 October 1971 in Long Beach, AC, the USA. This is forty-seven years old African-American citizen has been into rapping, singing, and songwriting since 1992. He has also diversified into acting and record production. He has two siblings and is the middle of 3 sons in the family. His father Vernell Varnado is a Vietnam War veteran who used to also sing and was not around most of the time. His mother is Beverly Broadus. Calvin got the nickname of Snoopy due to his physicality.

Snoop Dogg used to play piano at the local Church and when in the 6^th grade, he began rapping. His father had abandoned the family when he was just 3 months old. His mother had remarried but she and his stepfather also separated in 1975.

Snoop Dogg had legal encounters in his childhood and was a member of the Rollin’ 20 Crips gang which operated in the Eastside area of Long Beach. After his high school graduation, Snoop Dogg was arrested for cocaine possession. The next 3 years were in and out of jail for petty crimes.

Snoop Dogg had made a group called 213 with his cousins and this group started recording mixtapes. Producer Dr. Dre heard his mixtape and invited him over for an audition. He received some training which further refined his style and lyrics.

Snoop Dogg with the help of Dr. Dre recorded a theme song for the 1992 film called Deep Cover. Later they worked on Dr. Dre’s debut album The Chronic. He got exposure and his debut album Doggystyle was successful. However, he was listed amongst the violent and misogynistic musicians, though his Gangsta rap seemed to b softer than the others. His song Gangsta Life was a gospel-inspired tribute to his mother and talking about it, Snoop Dogg had said:

“It’s about how my mama raised me and my brothers on her own and how we got caught up on the streets…In the song I give my mama her respect and yet I try to show just what the wages are for kids not paying attention. I ain’t no gospel rap musician, man, but I got faith in what I believe in”

In August 1993, he and his driver McKinley Lee were arrested on charges of killing Philip Woldemariam, a member of a rival gang. The trial took 3 years but both were acquitted at the end of it. A short film called Murder was the case was released in 1994. In July 1995, he started his own record company called  Doggy Style Records, Inc., His second album called The Doggfather was released in November 1996. It had modest success. He slowly moved towards a calmer lyrical style.

He did tours in 1997 and with ‘No Limit Records’ in 1998 came out with more albums such as No Limit Top Dogg and the Last Meal. He published his autobiography called Doggfather in 2001. In 2004, he changed his record label and did several tracks with them; some of which hit the UK Top music charts. He also collaborated with other artists such as Ice Cube and appeared in their videos.

His single It’s the D.O.G was released first as a ringtone and later as a song in 2007. This was history. He did live concerts and released more singles. Priority Records gave him an executive position. In 2009, he released his 10^th album called Malice in Wonderland. More collaboration came his way many of which were successful ventures for him. In 2013, he released his documentary and an album; both were named Reincarnated. He changed his name to Snoop Lion. He continued to make and release more studio albums.

He also did TV and films in the capacity of an actor and also commenced on business projects. His net worth is valued at $ 135 million.
