There have been many serial killers known worldwide in the history of crime and some have had movies made on them as well. But none of them were so Satanic and chilling as Richard Ramirez. He also has several other nicknames such as The Night Stalker, The Valley Intruder, The Midnight Stalker, The Walk-in killer, Dedos, Ricky and the like. He had terrorized the residents of Los Angeles and caused the murder of one aged female outside LA in San Francisco.

His birth and life
Richard Ramirez’s real and full name is Ricardo Leyva Munoz Ramirez and was born on 29 February 1960 in El Paso, Texas. His upbringing was in poverty. He was the youngest of seven siblings born to a Mexican-American railway worker.
His bad influence in childhood was an older cousin named Mike who used to tell Richard tantalizing tales of how he tortured and mutilated Vietnamese women during his time in the Vietnam War. He had pictures of his Polaroid of these horrific crimes.
Richard Ramirez in his cousin’s bad company got addicted to marijuana and was a teen rebel. He started resorting to petty crimes to get money for his drug quota. This only increased the rift between him and his Catholic parents and this gave him more time with his cousin. Mike had murdered his wife in Richard’s presence and Richard took the clue from it to form his own modus operandi for the serial killings that he was to commit.
There is very limited information about his family and it is not known whether he went to school and college.
Richard’s work before the serial crimes
Richard used to do odd jobs before the major crimes of the mid-1980s. He had worked as a car mechanic and was in such manual jobs in LA. He was impressed greatly by Satanism and used to play rock band AC/DC’s song ‘Night Prowler’ on his stereo daily for hours on end.
His serial crimes
Richard Ramirez committed his first crime in June 1984. His modus operandi was that he would break into a house through an open window late at night when they had fallen asleep. He would then burgle the house, kill the husband with a gun or other weapon, mutilate the body, torture and rape the wife, mostly kill her as well after the sexual assault, and leave pentagrams of Satan at the crime scene either on the victim’s body or on the walls. His youngest victim was 6 years old and the oldest 84.
In between, he would kidnap young girls, rape them, and let them go. He again started the murders on 17 March 1985. One of his victims luckily survived to give a description of Richard to the police. But the murders continued unabated and police were clueless about the murderer’s whereabouts and unable to apprehend him.

The arrest
On 28 August 1985, he stole one of his victim’s cars and left it at Mission Viejo. Fingerprints found on the backside of the rear-view window were subjected to investigation and matching and it was found that it matched with those of Ramirez who was earlier convicted of petty crimes such as traffic and drug violations.
They had the killer and his description matched with what was described by the survivors. They released mugshot of the serial killer to the media. On 31 August, he was recognized by the residents of an East LA neighborhood while he was walking down the street. He tried to flee in a stolen car but the residents chased and caught him. The police were called and by the time they reached the location, he was almost beaten to death. He was charged and trialed in court. On 20 September 1989, he was found guilty of 13 murders and 30 felonies and sentenced to death.

His girlfriends, lovers, and wife
When Richard’s picture was released during his arrest, there were many girls who fell in love with him. Even Cindy Haden, an alternate juror fell in love with him and felt that he was innocent. He had around 100 or more women who proclaimed their love for him. There was one named Doreen Lioy who wrote to him and the two then finally met. He proposed to her in 1988 and the two got married in October 1996.
She said of him:
“He is funny, charming, and kind.”
She was with him for 12 years before she separated probably after his DNA was found in a cold case related to the murder of a young girl.
His death
Richard Ramirez was lodged in San Quentin Prison while awaiting his death sentence. He suffered from B-cell Lymphoma and expired due to its complications on 7 June 2013 at age 53 at Marin General Hospital, Greenbrae, California. His diagnosis of death was due to liver failure.
