Dean  Potter was a free climber, alpinist, base jumper, and highliner from the United States. In Yosemite National Park and Patagonia, he completed numerous hard first ascents, free solo ascents, speed ascents, and enchainments.

Dean Spaulding Potter is a former rock climber who was born on April 14, 1972, in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, USA.

Potter was born in the United States to his father, Anthony Potter, and mother, Patricia Dellert, both of whom are white ethnic groups.

The free climber grew up in New Hampshire with his parents, where he used to climb big rocks during his high school years in southern New Hampshire.

Spaulding then enrolled at the University of New Hampshire, but he dropped out before graduating to pursue his climbing passion.

Dean’s daring attempts earned him the moniker “Dark Wizard” among other climbers. In addition to base jumping, he mastered highlining.

Early Career

Potter started his professional climbing career as a free solo climber, competing in competitions such as El Capitan in Yosemite.

This six-hundred-foot rocky mountain was the first significant climb of his career.

Similarly, in July 2006, he completed his second most difficult climb, El Capitan’s “The Reticent Wall” in Yosemite Valley.

Potter, along with Ammon McNeely and Ivo Ninov, finished the climb in 34 hours and 57 minutes.

Similarly, as a speed climber, Dean and his climbing partner Sean Leary set a new speed record by ascending El Capitan’s Nose in 2 hours, 36 minutes, and 45 seconds.

With this record, they broke Yuji Hirayama and Hans Florine’s previous record of twenty seconds.

However, in June 2018, Jim Reynolds and Brad Gobright broke his record, followed by Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold with only 1 hour and 58 minutes.

HIGHLINING AND BASE JUMPING

Potter became interested in slacklining after meeting Charles Victor Tucker III, also known as Chongo.

He used to walk on the ropes but without any safety equipment, such as a lanyard or a jumping parachute.

The free climber traversed the slacklining in Yosemite National Park at a height of 3,000 feet (910m).

This talented and brave rock climber also invented freebasing, which is solo climbing without the use of ropes or BASE jumping parachutes.

Potter created a 22-minute short film, When Dogs Fly, in 2014 to depict the adventures of his hearing dog, Whisper.

However, the short film went viral after many animal rights activists criticized the film’s concept.

DELICATE ARCH CLIMB

The Delicate Arch of Arches National Park, which Potter climbed in 2006, was forbidden to climb.

He also lost his sponsorship from the Patagonia clothing company after the climb.

Potter, on the other hand, believes that there is no legal reason not to climb the delicate arch.

The Delicate Arch climb was later prohibited within Arches National Park.
