Donna’s interest in politics started when she was 9 and a local candidate in the office promised the public to build a playground in the neighborhood. Donna was at the local high school and had participated in the TRIO Upward Bound Program. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in industrial psychology from the Louisiana State University and this was in the year 1981. She had a fellowship at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Donna began work with an advocacy firm in Washington DC and she was part of many such groups. She played a major role in making King Martin Luther Jr’s birthday as a federal holiday. She was a volunteer for the Jimmy Carter-Walter Mondale presidential campaigns in the year 1976 and 1980.
Donna also worked for several presidential campaigns and this was for the Democratic candidates. She has been the field director for many of these elections. She had made some bold statements in 1988 when she stated that George H.W. Bush should clarify whether Barbara Bush will be sharing a bed with him in the White House or not since it was reported that he is having an extra-marital affair. She was fired for such comments.
Donna was appointed the Chief of Staff and press secretary of the Congressional Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton from the District of Columbia. She was in charge of the finances and budgeting of the campaign. She was also an advisor on these campaigns.
During the 2000 Presidential campaign for Vice-President Al Gore, Donna was the deputy campaign manager. She was also on the board of the Louisiana Recovery Authority from 2005 to 2009. She was also Chair of the Democratic National Committee’s Voting Rights Institute. She was the chairperson of the Democratic National Committee in 2016. She was accused of leaking questions to Hillary Clinton during the 2016 elections but she vehemently denied it. Her actions and interactions with Hillary Clinton were labeled as unethical and disgusting. She later said:
“My job was to make all our Democratic candidates look good and I worked closely with both campaigns to make that happen. But sending those e-mails was a mistake I will forever regret.”
She authored a book called Hacks in which she again said that she does not remember sending those emails and also did not believe that she would send them. She also added that she found no such emails on searching her own files on the computer. She said that she admitted only to put the matter behind her.
