Karla Souza is a Mexican-American actress who is best known for her portrayal of the character of law student Laurel Castillo in the legal drama series on ABC called How to Get away with Murder. This Mexican actress holds both Mexican and American passports and is currently in the USA for her role. Karla Souza has shown grit and determination and with her talent was able to create a niche for herself in the entertainment industry.

Karla’s full birth name is Karla Olivares Souza. She was born on 11 December 1985 in Mexico City, Mexico. Her father is Chilean while her mother is of Mexican descent. Her grandmother Chilean Elba Silva had come to the USA first in search of a better living. She was partly raised in America. Unto the age of 8 years, Karla had resided in Aspen, Colorado. Karla knew right from her early days that she would want to take action as a profession.
Pursuing her dream, Karla did an acting course at Centro de Educación Artística, the famed acting school run by Mexican media giant, Televisa, in Mexico City. She also procured training in acting in France. She was a member of the group that toured countrywide. This she gained vast experience in France. She then did an intensive summer acting course in Moscow, Russia. She took the training under the able guidance of Anatoly Smeliansky in Moscow Art Theater. She was selected to play a prominent part in the French reality TV show called Star Academy. But at the same time, she also got admission to Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. She refused the show and proceeded to England for the course. In 2008, she completed her BA in acting.

Karla Souza at the age of 22 years returned to Mexico and got the chance to star in telenovela Verano de Amor and musical Los Heroes Del Norte. She also played a part in La Clinica. She was also part of the cast of the highest-grossing Spanish-language film in America namely Instructions Not Included. She had also acted in The Noble Family which was the highest grossing film in Mexican history. She also acted in the Mexican film called From Prada to Nada. In 2013, she was also cast in the box office hit Nosotros Los Nobles.
In 2014, Karla decided to move to LA to get better offers in English-language film and TV. She did not have to wait long. She soon was cast in the ABC series How to Get Away with Murder. She plays the law student Laurel Castillo opposite Viola Davis. In February 2015, Karla featured on the cover of Women’s Health. Her knowledge of English, Spanish and French have helped her in her field.
When asked about her dream which she wants to fulfill, Karla had replied:
“Produce a movie We are already in plans, it is a story that I really want to make; After We the Nobles I realized that yes I could put together a team of producers, it’s something that excites me a lot.”
She also has a dream to play an athlete. She said:
“Yes, I would like to incarnate an athlete, my frustrated dream was to be an athlete, not a particular sport. I feel that it is a life similar to that of the actor in that you have to sacrifice many things, and competing for your country makes me phenomenal.”
She has also played the lead role in Todos Queremos an Alguien (Everybody Loves somebody, 2017). She does not like to play stereotypes and is tired of people believing that any Mexican with money is a drug peddler.

Karla Souza is a married woman. She started dating Texan banker Marshall Trenkmann and the two were engaged in December 2013. Karla had proudly disclosed that her engagement ring was designed by her then-boyfriend Marshall. The couple tied the knot in a ceremony held in California in May 2014. They then moved to LA. They are a happily living husband-wife duo and have no children yet. They complement and support each other. They share a great understanding and help each other in their careers. Talking about her married relationship, Karla had said:
“I’m very happy, my best friend, come and support me at all times, I share my profits and my successes with him, my successes and failures as well. Love is very complex and not anything more “good”, one knows the other, one when already corresponded says “there is something there”, but that is what makes us grow, life will bring obstacles and that is what makes you grow, I’m grateful to be with him.”
She had also said that her husband leaves sweet notes for her in her purse. She had said:
“My husband [Marshall Trenkmann] leaves me articles he wants me to read about something we were talking about, like Latino culture. Or he’ll drop a little note in my bag saying, ‘I hope your day goes well! I love you.’ It’s super sweet!”
