George Strait | Career
Starting in music
Strait discovered his love for music while still a high school student when he joined a rock and roll group. Initially drawn to the Beatles and other bands, he soon discovered country music and fell in love with artists like Hank Thompson, Lefty Frizzell, and Merle Haggard. He routinely attended live country music performances all around Texas.
Strait joined the Stoney Ridge group while still a student. The band’s name was changed to The Ace in the Hole Band after assuming the lead position.
They quickly established themselves in Texas and began playing live opening acts for well-known artists like the Texas Playboys.
Eventually, they got the chance to record a lot of singles. The group, however, never really took off, and George was forced to support himself by working on his family’s ranch.
Breakthrough
He was about to give up after being rejected by each major record label he approached. However, his wife encouraged him to keep trying. In 1981, MCA finally gave him a recording contract. In the same year, he released “Unwound,” his debut song.
It ended up becoming a tremendous hit, peaking at number six on the country charts, and George used that as inspiration to create his debut album, “Strait Country.”
Also, with his second album, “Strait From the Heart,” released in 1982, Strait went on to achieve his first number-one song, “Fool Hearted Memory.” After the tragic passing of his 13-year-old daughter, George Strait severed his ties to the media and stopped giving interviews, yet he kept releasing hit after hit.
To end the 1980s, he put out a number of well-received albums before attempting new sounds for the acclaimed 1990 album “Livin’ It Up.” He acted in the critically panned film “Pure Country” after releasing the album “Holding My Own.” Despite the failure of the movie, Strait’s most commercially successful album to date was the soundtrack, which he published.
Music Festival
Following the release of a number of subsequent hit albums, Strait founded the George Strait Country Music Festival in 1997. Strait performed with some of the biggest names in country music at the event, which would be held again in the following four years.
In 1999, he released the album “Always Never the Same.” As his self-titled album failed to become platinum, Strait saw a slight dip in 2000.
Strait continued to put out albums using his tried-and-true country music formula during the ensuing years, and they were generally successful.
