The formative years

If we talk about his pre-fame days, Jürgen Klinsmann was born on 30 July 1964 and his present age is 53. His birthplace is Goppingen, West Germany. His initial years were spent in Goppingen but when Jürgen was a teenager, his family migrated to Stuttgart’s Bonang district. His family owns a bakery shop there and hence Jürgen is affectionately called ‘the baker’s son from Botnang’. His father was Siegfried Klinsmann and his mother was Martha Klinsmann. He is one of the four sons of the couple.

Jürgen liked football right from his young days. At age 8, he began to represent an amateur club TB Gingen. He was one of the highest scorers on his team. After two years, he began playing for SC Geislingen. At the age of 16, he signed with Stuttgarter Kickers and was promised to be made professional 2 years later.

Jürgen completed his apprenticeship in the bakery in 1982 and the same year he began his professional football career. He scored a number of goals for his club. In 1984, he moved to VfB Stuttgart and scored for this club as well. In 1988, he was named the German Footballer of the Year.

He then joined the Italian club Inter Milan where he stayed from 1989 to 1992. He won the UEFA Cup for this team. He was later with Monaco (1992-1994), Tottenham Hotspur (1994-1995), and Bayern Munich from 1995 to 1997. Here too he was the top goal scorer. He also won the 1995-1996 UEFA Cup. He again played for Tottenham from 1997 to 1998. He retired and moved to the US and played for Orange County Blue Star.

Head coach of the German national team

His international career has been a striking and jubilant one. In 2004, he returned to Germany and became the head coach of the national team. But his tenure only drew criticism. But the 2006 World Cup win for the German team silenced his critics. People wanted him to continue to coach the team but he declined.

He took over to coach Bayern Munich in 2008. His strategies were criticized here and 2010, he was hired as a technical consultant for Major League Soccer club Toronto FC. In 2011, he became the head coach of the US national team and gave the team some wins. But due to the dismal performance at the 2016 match, he was fired from the post.
