Faye Wong is a well-known Chinese singer, songwriter, and actress who has sung a few songs in English as well. She is a cool personality and considered as a ‘diva with few words’. She is a singer, actress, celebrity, mother, sex symbol and a diva all in one.
Faye Wong is popular mainly in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan. She also has some presence in Japan but in America and the West, she is more famous for her acting roles. She has worked hard to reach the heights of fame that she has achieved.
Faye Wong’s birth and early life
Faye Wong was born on 8 August 1969 in Beijing, China. She is now 48 years old and is the daughter of a mining engineer and a revolutionary music soprano. She has an elder brother who is called Wang Yi. She has Chinese ethnicity and belongs to the country of China.

Faye Wong had started singing when young but though she was good at singing; her mother did not like her entering the same profession as her. Her mother considered singing as a dead-end profession. Faye Wong’s school had to hide their student’s talent in singing from her mother to allow her to pursue her liking.
Faye Wong’s career
Faye Wong kept her singing a secret from her mother and while in high school managed to release 6 budgeted cover albums (1985 to 1987). Her singing idol was the Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng and the covers mainly consisted of songs of this musical artist. In 1987, Faye Wong got enrolled at Xiamen University and joined her father in Hong Kong.

It was decided that she would stay for a year in Hong Kong to obtain permanent residency and then proceed abroad for further studies.
Faye Wong did some modeling and learned singing from Tai See-Chung. She was signed by Cinepoly Records which followed her winning third place at the ABU singing contest in 1988. Her name was changed to Wong Jing Man and her English name was Shirley Wong. Her debut album called Shirley Wong sold more than 30000 copies. She won a music award for this album.

After such a great start, Faye Wong released two more albums; both failed to farewell. In 1991, Faye Wong traveled to New York to learn vocals and for cultural exchange. She, however, missed the registration deadline. Talking about those days and her experience, Faye Wong had said in 1996:
“I wandered around, visited museums and sat at cafes. There were so many strange, confident-looking people. They didn’t care what other people thought of them. I felt I was originally like that too, independent and a little rebellious. But in Hong Kong I lost myself. I was shaped by others and became like a machine, a dress hanger. I had no personality and no sense of direction.”

After returning to Hong Kong, she got a new agent called Katie Chan. She released the album Homecoming soon after. She gained fame in 1992 and 1993 with her songs which became a hit. There was also an English number on this album. She also made her TV appearances at that time in the TV series File of Justice II.
In 1993, she wrote in Mandarin her lyrics for the ballad ‘No Regrets’. This was praised by many listeners. Her next album 100000 Whys had more influence from the West. She released more albums and songs in Cantonese and Mandarin. Her fans thought that she had an intriguing combination of artistic experimentation and commercialism.
She also did several concerts in Hong Kong and starred in Chungking Express. She did not enjoy the HK entertainment industry and ended up giving terse and candid answers to questions by the HK media. In 1997, she signed with EMI and released more albums and songs. She wrote Eyes on Me in English for the Japanese video game. The millennium gave her more fame and a diva status thanks to her various worthy songs and albums.

The hiatus and return

She took a five-year hiatus from 2005 and returned in 2010. She did a tour but did not release any albums. She released a few singles and was mainly concentrating on her family and charity. She avoids any music award functions and other events.
Her personal life and family
She was dating Beijing rocker, Dou Wei, from the early 1990s and married him in June 1996. They had a daughter called Duo Jingtong on 3 January 1997. The couple separated in 1999 and Wong got custody of the child.

She entered into a relationship with TV actor Li Yapeng and married him in July 2005 after a year of courtship. Their daughter Li Yan was delivered on 27 May 2006. By September 2013 the couple had called it quits. She had a relationship with musician Nicholas Tse who is 11 years her junior in 2002 and later from 2014. The couple is said to be together still.
