Lolo Jones was born on August 5. 1982 in Des Moines, IA to his father James Jones, Sr. And mother Lori Jones. She grew up together with her sister Angelia Jefferson and brother James Jones Jr. Her father was in the Air Force and later worked in state prison.

She was named Lori at birth, after her mother, but said she started going by “Lolo” in order to differentiate the two on the telephone. She is of Native American, African-American, French, and Norwegian ethnicity. Also, she is a devout Christian, and often prays before competitions and talks about her faith on Twitter.
