The recent Gold Medal at the 2018 CWG
Mary Kom had participated in the 2018 CWG held in Australia. On Day 10, Mary Kom won the gold for her country by defeating Northern Ireland’s Kristina O’Hara 5-0. She won it in the 45-48 kg category. This was the first gold for India in the boxing field. She has become the first Indian boxer to procure a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
The early days
She is from Manipur in Eastern India. She was born on 24 November 1982 in Kangthei village, Moirang Lamkhai in Churachandpur district, rural Manipur. She belonged to a poor family. Her parents are Mangte Tonpa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom. They worked as tenant farmers in the fields. She has a younger sister and brother. Her father was a wrestler in his young days.
Mary Kom school and boxing training
Mary Kom grew up in these humble surroundings and used to help her parents in the farm chores. She attended school and also started learning athletics and boxing. She studied at the Loktak Christian Model High School at Moirang and after 6th grade at the St. Xavier Catholic School. Dingko Singh had returned from the 1988 Bangkok Asian Games with a gold medal and this inspired her to try her hand at boxing.
In 9th grade, she joined Adimjati High School, Imphal. She failed her matriculation and gave it privately to get her graduation and later attended the Churachandpur College. Her first coach was first coach K. Kosana Meitei from Imphal and later trained with Manipur State Boxing Coach M. Narjit Singh, at Khuman Lampak, Imphal.
Mary Kom career
Mary Kom won the state boxing championship in 2000. She had not informed her father about her boxing career and he came to know from a newspaper clipping. He was initially hesitant but later supported her,
She was away from boxing for a while due to her marriage and the birth of two children. She restarted her training and won a silver medal at the 2008 Asian Women’s Boxing Championship in India. In China too, she won a gold medal at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship. She was another gold win at the 2009 Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam.

Mary Kom is a married woman. Her husband is footballer Karung Onkholer (Onler). They had met in 2000 and later at a sports meet in Delhi. Being the president of the North East student body, he had helped Mary on several occasions. They started dating after their friendship and married in 2005.
The couple has three sons- 3 sons: twins Rechungvar and Khupneivar (born in 2007) and son Prince (born in May 2013).
