Ja Rule, real name Jeffrey Bruce Atkins, is an American rapper and actor. In 1999, he made his acting debut in Venni Vetti Vecci, which included the song “Holla Holla” as its theme. In the 2000s, Ja Rule worked as a recording artist for The Inc., the original name of Irv Gotti’s Murder Inc. Records.

Early Life, Family, and Education

Jeffrey Bruce Atkins was born in Queens, New York, on the 29th of February, 1976. He was raised in the Hollis region by Debra and William Atkins. Ja Rule spent a lot of time with his grandparents because of his parents’ busy schedules. They were Jehovah’s Witnesses, leading to his eventual conversion to the faith.

He gave up his religion when he was 12 years old and began selling drugs in Hollis. Because of his small stature, he frequently got into fights at school. He obtained his GED in 2012 despite not finishing high school.

Ja Rule | Career

Early Career

Atkins began his rap career in 1994 with the hip-hop crew Cash Money Click, which also included Chris Black and O-1. He started using the stage moniker “Ja Rule,” telling MTV News that a friend had given it to him; other friends simply called him “Ja.” They worked together with DJ Irv to produce a large number of songs, and in 1994 they independently published their debut single, “Get Tha Fortune.”

Breakthrough

Ja Rule made his solo debut on the Mic Geronimo song “Time to Build,” which also featured Jay-Z and DMX. Rule joined Def Jam in 1998 and made an appearance on Jay-song Z’s “Can I Get A…” His debut album, Venni Vetti Vecci, which was released in 1999, eventually reached the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart.

When Rule 3:36, Ja Rule’s second album, was released on October 10, 2000, it debuted at the top of the charts with 276,000 copies sold in its first week.

In October 2001, the second single, “Always on Time,” was available to listen to. The youngest member of Murder Inc., Ashanti, and Ja Rule both appeared on it, and it became the first of their singles to peak at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Both of his second and third albums, which both peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop charts, were certified 3x Platinum.

He released his fourth album on November 19, 2002. The song generated two top-charting singles and debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2003 and 2004, he released his fifth and sixth albums, respectively.

His fifth studio album, Blood in My Eye, was made available on November 4, 2003, on the Murder Inc. label. The label changed its name to “The Inc.” a few days later. It was considered to as a “hate” record directed at a variety of rappers, including 50 Cent, G-Unit, Eminem, Proof, Dr. Dre, DMX, Busta Rhymes, and others. The album marked a return to Ja Rule’s prior hardcore style.

R.U.L.E

The sixth studio album by Ja Rule, R.U.L.E., debuted at #7 and generated 166,000 sales in its first week of release in November 2004. After releasing a sixth studio album and a greatest hits collection, Ja Rule ended his relationship with Def Jam and parted ways in 2005. Up until February 2011, when he claimed to have started production on a new album titled “Pain is Love 2,” he took a sabbatical.

His autobiography, Unruly: The Highs and Lows of Becoming a Man, was published in 2014. His eighth studio album was announced shortly after, however it was postponed indefinitely. In December 2016, he had a cameo on The Hamilton Mixtape. He rapped the verse for Ashanti’s rendition of “Helpless,” noting Lin-Manuel Miranda’s portrayal of Hamilton in the song’s final line.

On June 26, 2018, Ja Rule and Ashanti announced their intention to work together on an album. On October 15, 2021, he released “Sincerely, Jeffrey” via all streaming platforms to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the release of his third studio album, Pain is Love.

Legal Issues

In 2003, the accused victim of his alleged assault in Toronto filed a lawsuit. He received a $1,200 fine after admitting to the assault.

Police investigated if a disagreement involving Murder Inc. was a factor in a fatal shooting that occurred in 2004 outside a party that Ja Rule and Leon Richardson were holding at a nightclub.

In July 2007, Ja Rule, Lil Wayne, and Don Rhys were all detained on suspicion of having illegal drugs and guns. As a result of the arrest, Don Rhys received an eight-month prison term in 2010 for attempting to possess a handgun.

Ja Rule was detained in 2007 and on December 13, 2010, he was sentenced to two years in jail after pleading guilty to attempted possession of a weapon. In July 2011, he was given a second 28-month prison term for tax evasion.

This sentence will run concurrently with the first one. He earned more than $3 million between 2004 and 2006 but did not pay the necessary taxes. He was released from state prison on parole on February 21, 2013. But he was arrested right after by federal agents in connection with the tax case, for which he had less than six months left to fulfill his sentence.

Controversies

50 Cent

The conflict allegedly began in 1999 after Ja Rule saw him with the person who had stolen his jewelry and also as a result of Ja Rule “trying to be Tupac,” according to 50 Cent. However, 50 Cent did not appreciate that Ja Rule was “getting such much respect” from the neighborhood. Ja Rule said that the argument started while they were filming a Queens music video.

Aftermath

The conflict started in 2002 after 50 Cent teamed up with Shady Records and Aftermath. When Dr. Dre and Eminem signed 50 Cent, Ja Rule and Irv Gotti condemned them for doing so. And, threatened legal action if they released any 50 Cent songs that were critical of Murder Inc.

Fyre Festival

The music festival “Fyre Festival,” co-organized by Ja Rule, was slated to take place in late April 2017 on a private island in the Bahamas. The issue turned out to be a serious calamity. On May 1st, 2017, a festival attendee filed a $100 million class-action lawsuit against Ja Rule and Billy McFarland, the event’s co-founders.
