Jaggi Vasudev is commonly called Sadhguri and is an Indian saint who also writes books that are New York’s bestsellers. Jaggi Vasudev is the founder of the Isha Foundation which teaches yoga to people around the world. He is involved in various social causes and also is an activist for environmental issues.
Jaggi Vasudev is a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan Civilian Award and it was last year that the Government of India has conferred it on him.
Jaggi Vasudev-early life and childhood
Jaggi Vasudev is originally from Mysore in Karnataka. He had three siblings and was the youngest amongst them. He had one brother and two sisters. His father was an eye surgeon working with the Indian Railways while his mother was a homemaker. He came across some spiritual leaders when he was small and was deeply influenced by them.
He has Indian nationality and ethnicity. He studied at the Demonstration School and later joined the Mahajana Pre-University College in Mysore. In 1973, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in English literature from the University of Mysore. He was interested in motorcycles and traveling during his college days.
Jaggi Vasudev and spiritualism
Jaggi at the age of 25 rode up to the Chamundi Hills and sat in a rock. He git spiritualism according to him on 23 September 1982. He described the experience thus:
“Till that moment in my life, I always thought this is me and that’s somebody else and something else. But for the first time, I did not know which is me and which is not me. Suddenly, what was me was just all over the place. The very rock on which I was sitting, the air that I breathe, the very atmosphere around me, I had just exploded into everything. That sounds like utter insanity. This, I thought it lasted for ten to fifteen minutes but when I came back to my normal consciousness, it was about four-and-a-half-hours I was sitting there, fully conscious, eyes open, but time had just flipped.”
He gave up his business and traveled extensively to gain more insight. After a year, he began teaching yoga free of charge in 1982 in Mysore and later also in Hyderabad.
Isha Yoga Center was founded and in 1994 he conducted the first class there. His classes also began in the USA in 1997. He also teaches meditation. The Isha Foundation was also founded and it was a non-profit organization. They work for rural people and also have an educational initiative. He has rallied for the rivers of India and worked for the environmental cause.
He has been part of various international forums. He also is the author of several spiritual books which are New York’s bestsellers. He has written in English as well as Tamil, Kannada, Telegu, and Hindi.

Jaggi Vasudev-wife and daughter
Jaggi was married and his wife’s name was Vijaykumari. They were married in 1984 and she died in January 1997. 7 months after her death a case was filed against him for causing the death of his wife. Later the file was closed. He has a daughter named Radhe with her. Here is what he told about her death:
“Because my wife, Vijji, was part of the consecration process, for me in this life, the social situation was more conducive. Everything was going too well, like a dream. When things were going so well, especially with a process like this, I knew some impediment would come. Usually, the difficulty always came from social situations. So I instructed all the people around me to be extremely careful not to get into any kind of trouble anywhere; not to create any kind of resistance with anybody, because I knew something was coming. From which direction it would come, we were watching, and here it came. Vijji just dropped her body, and the consecration was left incomplete. She attained Mahasamadhi, and we were back to square one again. Ninety-five percent of the work was done. Just a little more time, in one more week, we would have completed the consecration, but now we got stuck. It took us another one-and-a-half years to finish the work.”
