Jane Pauley is an American TV journalist and an author who has been doing news reporting since 1972. With her vast experience, she is now host of CBS Sunday Morning. She was on NBC’s Today program for many years and also was a co-host of Dateline NBC. She has publicly acknowledged her fight with her mental illness (bipolar disorder).

Jane Pauley is 67 years old and was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in the USA on 31 October 1950. Her birth name is Margaret Jane Pauley. Her parents were Mary and Richard Pauley and she is their second child. Her older sister is Ann and Jane grew up idolizing her. Her father was a traveling salesman with Wilson Milk Company and her mother was a homemaker. But her mom was adept in Mathematics and was a good musician and used to play the organ at the Sunday Church.

Jane Pauley was a shy kid and later gradually overcame her shyness to become a speech and debate champion at her Warren Central High School. She got many awards for this talent.

“Looking back, the luckiest thing that ever happened to me was not making varsity cheerleader in the tenth grade. I don’t know what career I would have if it weren’t for my high school experience with forensics. It was the most important activity I had in high school or college, counting all of the academic courses.”

She was also Governor of Girls State and Girl Nation’s delegate from her school. She completed her school graduation in 1968 and joined Indiana University from where she earned a degree in political science. She finished her college one semester early.

Jane auditioned for a reporter’s job with WISH-TV and the news director Lee Giles was impressed by her performance. He later said:

“She really came through the camera like nobody I had ever seen before in an audition. She had tremendous presence and like she was one with the camera.”

After three years, Jane left WISH-TV and joined WMAQ-TV in 1975. She was the first female co-anchor for a major evening newscast on NBC and 10 months later became the host of Today show. She continued on this post until 1989 and used to host NBC Nightly News for two years in between. She was dubbed as America’s favorite newswoman. After she left Today show showed a 22% decrease in ratings. She also co-hosted many award shows.

Jane began to anchor Dateline on NBC which she did from 1992 to 2003. She got her own show in 2004. She also published her memoir the same year and it was New York’s best seller. In 2009, she returned to Today show for a small segment. In 2014, she began to contribute to CBS show and used to appear as a guest host on CBS Sunday Morning. In 2016, she took over as host of the latter show after Charles Osgood’s retirement.
