One of the most savages of the killers in the history of Japan was Tsutomu Miyazaki. This Japanese murderer was not only a serial killer but also a cannibal, pedophile, and necrophile. He was unremorseful of his misdeeds and was also nicknamed by the press by various names which included: The Rat Man, Dracula, The Otaku Murderer, The Little Girl Murderer, and the like.
He was convicted of kidnapping and brutally murdering 4 minor girls between 1988-1989, but there could have been more such unreported and unknown murders.
Tsutomu’s childhood history and family background
Tsutomu Miyazaki was born on 21 August 1962 in Itsukaichi, Tokyo, Japan. His father ran a successful newspaper. But it was found during the trial that Tsutomu was the result of his father’s incestuous relationship with one of his sisters.
He was a preterm baby with deformities of the upper limbs in which his wrist joint was missing and his hands were joined directly to the wrist. He was bullied in school and used to prefer to be alone.

He exhibited abnormal behavior right from his childhood and was said to have eaten the ashes of his grandfather. He studied at Meidai Nakano High School in Nakano, Tokyo. He was a good student academically but soon his grades demonstrated a drastic drop.
He had wanted to study English and become a teacher. But instead, he attended a local junior college and studied to become a photo technician. In the mid-1980s, he returned to stay near his parents’ house.
During the trial, Tsutomu Miyazaki admitted that his parents were more worried about the material than emotions and never heard him. He also said that he had suicidal tendencies at that phase of his life. In May 1988, his grandfather expired and he slipped into a severe depression since he was very close to his grandfather.
The signs of ‘something amiss’
One day, his sister caught him observing her while she was taking a shower. On asking him to leave the site, he attacked her. When his mother intervened and advised him to spend more time at work rather than in videos, she too was attacked.
But both these attacks were unreported and neither was any medical or psychological assistance sought. The early signs were ignored and Tsutomu Miyazaki intensified his wrong actions and then the murders!

The murders
In the period between August 1988 and June 1989, Tsutomu had abducted 4 minor girls (4-7 years old) and mutilated and killed them. He then sexually assaulted their corpses. He even went to the extent of eating the hand of one of his victims and drinking the blood.
He continued to lead a normal life during the daytime and in society.

He wrote letters to the families of the victims detailing the murders. He would also give ‘blank phone calls’ to the victim’s families. His known victims were: Mari Konno, 4, Masami Yoshizawa, 7, Erika Namba, 4, and Ayako Nomoto, 5. He also filmed many of his crimes.
The arrest
Tsutomu Miyazaki was engaged in some misdeed with a girl in the park. On being confronted by the girl’s father, he fled but came back later to retrieve his car. The girl’s father had alerted the police who then laid a trap for Tsutomu and caught him.
His house was searched and various books, videotapes, body remains were found. He faced trial and his father refused to pay his legal fees and committed suicide in 1994. Tsutomu refused to apologize to the victims’ parents and said that he had done ‘an act of benevolence’.
