He is the writer of the screenplay ‘Shotgun Stories’ with Micahel Shannon, which was Nicholas’ first screenplay. He contacted Micahel with the help of a former teacher. The film was shot with a total budget of only $250,000 and it was released in 2007.
During the initial phase of the film, he submitted the ‘Shotgun Stories’ to Sundance but was promptly rejected.
He said,
“It broke my heart”.
But he along with his teammate rallied.
And later, the film was accepted into the Berlinale. He said,
“I was so broke”
“They had these filmmaker receptions, and I’d stick food in my pockets. I was drinking free beer and getting real drunk because I was so hungry.”
He moved into larger independent productions with 2011’s ‘Take Shelter’ in which he starred Shannon and starred Matthew McConaughey in the 2012’s ‘Mud’. The film ‘Mud’ competed for the Plame d’Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. He acted as President of the Jury of the 7th Rome Film Festival in 2012.
He wrote and directed the film ‘Midnight Special’ in 2016 which competed for the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival. After the success of the movie, he has fulfilled his childhood dream of making a big-budget movie.

“I was like, ‘Fuck this. Fuck everybody. You don’t like these speeches? Do you think this is too cute? Well, here’s Midnight Special.’ I’m going to take out every piece of fucking information in this movie and just give you the essence of what this thing is.” He pauses. “Perhaps I overcorrected.”
