Jill Janus, the lead singer of the heavy metal band Huntress, has died at age 43, on August 14, 2018. Janus was struggling with mental illness. Huntress lead singer Jill Janus has taken her own life, her group and family have confirmed.

Jill Janus Bio, Family

Janus was born in Catskills Mountains, New York, USA on September 2, 1975. There is no information about her family and childhood. Jill never talked about her family in the media.

While in an interview with media, she talked about her mother and said,

“Music saved my life. My mother says I was singing before I could speak. I knew my purpose as soon as I could talk. It was always music. I relate to the mathematics behind the music, it soothes my brain and helps me cope with my various disorders. By the time I was 10, I was performing in operas and musicals. My vocal range developed quickly. I was using four octaves by 13. The discipline and focus were beyond my years. But I’ve never had much patience for people. I was always one step ahead. Music is the only way I ever knew how to cope.”

Janus attended the American Music and Dramatic Academy for post-secondary education.

Janus started her career as a topless disc Jockey under the name Penelope Tuesday. She also worked in cabaret at the Windows on the World until the night before the Sept.11 attack in New York Twins Tower. From 2003-06, Janus worked as a member of Vexy Strut, but in 2009, she recruited members of the metal band Professor to join her newly formed band, Huntress. The members of her group as Spencer, Jacob, Ian Alden, Sean Ford, and Anthony Camo.

In 2013, Jill composed some beautiful songs such as ‘I want to fuck death,’ ‘Zenith’ and ‘Starbound Beast.’

To one side from her albums with Huntress, Janus jumped in for Amon Amarth’s lead singer Johan Hegg during a 2015 co-tour with Huntress. Janus’s other projects of Huntress included membership of cover bands Chelsea Girls and The Starbreakers as their lead singer. She also co-writes album Victory: The Rock Opera with guitarist Angus Clark.

Jill Janus Health Problems…

In 2015, Janus disclosed to Revolver that she was living with bipolar disorder from an early age. Later, she was experiencing dissociative identity disorder and schizophrenia. That same year, Jill experienced a hysterectomy after she was diagnosed with uterus cancer.

Janus Attempted Several Suicides

Janus described in an interview when she first noticed changes during teenage years,

“At the age of 14, my family noticed a shift in my moods. I was very active as a performer, had a strong sense of purpose and was almost too self-confident. I developed a superiority complex and started having fist fights at school, mostly with boys. The violence was explosive. Then I’d sink into depression. I experienced rapid cycling between the two modes.
“I attempted suicide for the first time at the age of 16 with a pair of scissors. I was getting mandatory counseling at school but didn’t see a psychiatrist until I was 20. I was then diagnosed manic-depressive and participated in a medical study at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.”

According to Psychology Today’s post, Janus described how things became particularly problematic for her when she was then diagnosed with cancer. While suffering from either mental illness or physical illness alone can be difficult, the combination of the two can often be experienced as devastating and insurmountable. Janus also described how her despair, in conjunction with alcohol use, resulted in a suicide attempt.

“When I was diagnosed with Stage 1 uterine cancer earlier this year, I had a tough time keeping my life together. I was recording my third album, ‘Static,’ with Huntress, and I fell back into drinking heavily. I’m an alcoholic, so this got ugly fast, my boyfriend, Blake, called 911 twice, once for a suicide attempt in April. Then I was given an ultimatum: stop drinking, get health insurance, get on meds or he leaves me, and the band breaks up. I spent a few days soul-searching and feeling the pain I caused my family.”

Her boyfriend posted on social media about her suicide,

“I hope you have found the peace that you couldn’t find on this planet.”

A public memorial for Jill Janus was announced after ten days of her funeral at the Rainbow Bar & Grill in West Hollywood, California. Her Band-mates posted to their official Facebook pages that,

“Since Jill’s departure, the amount of outreach and support from friends, fans and family has been absolutely incredible,” the statement begins. “It has been beyond heavy to see so many reminders of how she could be so talented and loved yet could feel so much pain and loneliness. Let’s get together and celebrate her life and the importance that we still have each other. Expect a lot of whiskey and grown men crying.”

In 2015, Janus shared on social media that she was breaking up. She was later disproved by her boyfriend band’s guitarist Blake Meahl mentioning her critical mental health issues. They were in a relationship for nine years until she died.

Founding member and boyfriend Blake Meahl said on his Facebook page that,

“Janus and I spent 9 years together creating a home, having a family and building our passion project Huntress. The devastation of knowing I will never see her again is the most gutting emotion I have ever experienced.”
