He rose to fame in 1985 after he won the Star Search competition for best stand-up comic, defeating Sinbad. he portrayed the voice of Crypt Keeper in Tales from the Crypt, but he has also done voice-over work for anime, video games, and other productions.
Furthermore, in the video games X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, he also voiced the mercenary Deadpool, as well as Sauron and Pyro, two other well-known characters. In 1987, John appeared in the very first advertisement for Nintendo’s iconic video game series The Legend of Zelda, which was released in the United States.
Likewise, in Disney’s 1995 animated film Pocahontas and Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World, he gave his voice to the mischievous raccoon Meeko. In the video game Dead Rising, he voiced the character Adam MacIntyre and provided additional voice-over work.
His voice can be heard as Hell Demon and Desperado Enforcement captain Monsoon in the game’s Shadows of the Damned and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, respectively.
