John Morris

John  Morris is a two-time Olympic gold medalist curler from Canmore, Alberta. Morris was a member of Kevin Martin’s team.

Curling legend John C. Morris was born on December 16, 1978, to Canadian curlers Earle Morris and Maureen Morris.

His father invented the stabilizer curling broom and was the first curler to represent three provinces at the Brier.

His father was also inducted into the Curling Hall of Fame in 2016 and has coached at the Elena Stern rink.

Morris is the third generation of his family to compete in the Macdonald Brier, as his father Earle and great-grandfather Cliff McLachlan both skipped Saskatchewan in the 1933 Macdonald Brier.

As a result, he had a curling-filled childhood that inspired him to pursue this career path.

He wasn’t, however, limited to curling. He played hockey, softball, volleyball, soccer, and baseball in high school at Colonel By Secondary School in Gloucester, Ontario.

later, he enrolled at Wilfrid Laurier University to pursue a degree in Kinesiology.

Career

Early Career

Morris moved to Ontario after juniors and began his career with Stayner Granite Club in his first season after juniors.

Except for Young, his junior curling team remained nearly unchanged. Andy Ormsby took his place on the men’s team.

Later, the team competed in the playdowns for the 2000 Ontario Nokia Cup but lost in the regionals. Joe Frans joined the team as the third after Ormsby left in 2000.

Soon after, the team won a couple of tour events and finished second in the 2001 Ontario Nokia Cup provincial championship.

They also qualified for the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials in 2001. Morris received national attention despite a crushing defeat to Russ Howard.

Morris won his first Ontario provincial championship in 2002 and qualified for the 2002 Nokia Brier.

Similarly, the Morris rink reached the finals of the inaugural Canada Cup of Curling in 2003 but lost to Randy Ferbey. The team also competed in the provincial championship that year, reaching the semifinals.

 Curling Career

Morris began curling as a skip for the Ottawa Curling Club. From 1997 to 1999, he won three consecutive Ontario provincial junior Men’s titles.

He also won the Canadian and World Junior Championships in 1998 and 1999. As a result, he set a record for the most wins by a skip along the way.

At the 1997 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, his team, which included Craig Savill, Matt St. Louis, and Mark Homan, finished third.

He led the team to first place in the 1998 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, winning gold with a 9-3 round-robin record.

The following season, his team replaced Ormsby with Jason Young as a second baseman. In addition, the team won the 1999 Canadian World Junior Curling Championships.

Morris also won a provincial junior mixed title with Jacqueline Smith, Brent Laing, and Chrissy Cadorin in 1999. He was also a WJCC All-Star skip and a Canadian Citizenship Award winner.

Calgary Winter Club

Morris formed a new team in Calgary, which included Kevin Koe, Marc Kennedy, and Paul Moffatt. The team had previously won a few tour events, including the 2004 Players’ Championship Grand Slam. The band later reunited for three seasons.

The team, however, never won a provincial championship and finished second in the 2005 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials.

Team up with K-Mart

Morris and Kevin Martin’s new team won the 2007 Kia Cup provincial championship, defeating Morris’ former teammate Kevin Koe in the final.

Morris finished third in the tournament’s all-star voting. The team dominated three of the four Grand Slam events in their first season together, the Canadian Open, the National, and the Players’ Championship.

Similarly, Kevin Martin and Morris returned to the Brier after winning the Boston Pizza Cup provincial championship in 2008.

Morris was also named MVP of the Canadian Men’s Curling Championship Final, curling 90% at the Brier.

The following season, the team won the 2009 Boston Pizza Cup. As a result, they won their second Tim Hortons Brier championship in a row.

Furthermore, the team won the 2009 Canada Cup of Curling, qualifying them for the 2009 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials.

Morris and Team Martin represented Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. They even won the gold medal for the Alberta-based team on home ice, defeating Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud.

Similarly, the team won the BDO Classic Canadian Open in 2010 and the Players’ Championship in 2010. In the Grand Slam competition, the team won the December 2010 National as well as the 2011 Players Championship.

Morris won the Canada Cup of Curling in 2011-12, earning him a spot in the 2013 Canadian Olympic Trials.

The team also won the provincials in 2013, defeating Kevin Koe’s team in the final, and thus competed in the 2013 Tim Hortons Brier.

Mixed Doubles

Morris first collaborated with Rachel Homan in pre-trial events. Morris had to find a new partner after Rachel’s team was chosen to represent Canada in the Olympic women’s event.

As a result, Morris and Kaitlyn Lawes won the 2018 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Olympic Trials. They went on to win gold at the Winter Olympics, defeating Switzerland.

Morris continued to work with Lawes after the Olympics, focusing on the mixed doubles event rather than the team event. They won a number of mixed doubles tournaments, including the Canada Inns Mixed Doubles Classic.

Morris played with several mixed doubles partners after Lawes was injured. He and Rachel Homan won the Qualico Mixed Doubles Classic.

Back to the Team Event

Morris has joined John Epping’s team as an alternate for the 2020 Tim Hortons Brier.

Morris then joined Kevin Koe’s team as their new second baseman. He placed second in the 2019 Tour Challenge Grand Slam event.

The team competed in several provincial events during the 2020-21 season before being forced to cancel due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After COVID was reduced, the team earned the second Wild Card spot at the 2021 Brier in Calgary, Alberta.
