Jon M. Chu and his growing years
Jon M. Chu was born on 2 November 1979 and his full name is Jonathan Murray Chu. His birthplace is Palo Alto, CA and he was raised in the nearby Los Altos. His father is Lawrence Chu and is a famous chef. His parents are Chinese immigrants and owners of the popular restaurant in Los Altos called Chef Chu’s.
He is their youngest child and has four siblings. Talking about his father, Jon had said:
“He would take us to school every day but he was at the restaurant all the time.”
His parents always pushed their kids to find their passion and supported them.

Jon M. Chu made a short film while at school which was called When the Kids are away. He was then signed by William Morris Agency to write for several projects. Sony Pictures then hired Jon to direct their film Bye Bye Birdie. But budget constraints came up and the project was shelved, starting his professional career.
Jon had acted in some films in the initial days. These include Freaked in 1993 and Once a Cop in 1993. Jon is also a dancer and is in the dance group called AC/DC or Adam/Chu crew. He also is writing some online films and has other projects at hand. His latest directed film has been Crazy Rich Asians in 2018. In 2016, he had directed Now You See Me 2.
Jon was once asked in an interview as to why all his films have the dance component in them. He answered:
“I don’t know why. It seems so obvious. But there’s something about the dancers that motivate me the most. I don’t know if it’s just dance, but I do think that the dancers are amazing artists, and every time I meet a new dancer, that triggers something in my brain, and I’m more creative than I could ever be. When I feel that creativity burst, I go with it.”
