The Amateur Days

Juan developed an interest in sports at the young age of 12.

Everyone is aware of what happened when he tried the triple jump but quickly discovered he wasn’t very good at it and turned to the long jump.

Juan acknowledged in an interview that he used to be an extremely active child.

According to reports, Juan didn’t particularly enjoy working out, but his parents encouraged him to persevere and get better. The financial crisis must have motivated people to work hard.

Professional Life and Career

Juan started his career in 2015, the same year he qualified for the Cuban under-18 team and made his first 8-meter long jump.

Juan made his debut at the World Youth Championship. By winning the 7.76m leap event at the 2015 Pan American Junior Championship in Edmonton, Canada, Juan completed the year.

His performance at the World U20 Championship, when he placed fifth with a jump of 7.78 meters, was not the best. According to the leaderboards, he was just 10 centimeters below the first spot.

Despite just competing twice in U18 divisions, Juan received the opportunity to compete against the big boys at the 2017 IAAF World Championship while representing Cuba internationally.

His best performance to date was a jump of 7.86 meters, although he was unable to proceed to the finals despite this.

The next year, in 2018, Juan made his senior debut at the World Indoor Championship in Karlsruhe and won the event with a great jump of 8.46 meters, which was also a personal record at the time.

This was his best professional achievement when he won the gold and overcame the world champion Luvo Manyonga.

In reality, by winning against the best, he enhanced his standing on the world stage.

After taking a year off, Juan participated in the IAAF Diamond League in Rome in 2019 and lost to his new rival, Luvo.

Following his success indoors, Juan won more events outside. In his first senior Pan American Games, he cleared 8.27 meters to win gold for Cuba and extend his winning streak.

Juan placed third in his first World Championship in Doha, Qatar after failing to qualify in 2017.

The Olympics

The year 2020 was challenging for everyone, but Juan was particularly hampered by a leg injury and his inability to participate due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
