Lane started his career as a graduate assistant for one year at Colorado State University. He secured a job with the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL as a quality control assistant for a year.
Lane also worked with theUniversity of Southern California staff during the 2001 season. on 23rd January, 2007 he signed up by Raiders owner AI Davis and became the youngest head coach in Oakland Raiders.
He returned to the USC to become the head coach on 12th January 2010. In the same year, his first season at USC, his team completed the season with 8-5 record but could not play the post-season. In 2011, Trojans scored 10-2 record as Kiffin as a coach. He left USC in 2013.
After that, he worked at Alabama as an offensive co-ordinate. In 2014, he was the finalist for the Broyles Award.
After working for Alabama, he joined the Florida Atlantic Owls on 12th December 2016 as a head coach and led the Owls to an 11-3 season after a 50-3 victory over Akron in the Boca Raton Bowl.
On 6th December 2019, he was close to being accepted as the head coach at Ole Miss. On 7th December he won in the C-USA championship game confirmed his position as a head coach in Ole.
