Lee Haney is a retired IFBB professional bodybuilder from the United States. Haney, who holds the all-time record for the most Mr. Olympia titles with eight, is regarded as one of the greatest bodybuilders to ever grace the stage.
Early Life, & Education
Lee Haney was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina on November 11, 1959. Initially, he hoped to become a professional football player, but a leg injury put a stop to his ambitions.
Then Haney turned his attention to becoming the best bodybuilder he could be. As a child, he fantasized about gaining muscle and developing physiques like Samson and Hercules.
Lee later devoted his entire life to fitness and bodybuilding.
Lee’s father used to have a lot of physical chores when he was younger, and he would always help him with them.
As a result, when Lee was eleven years old, he asked his parents for a weight set for Christmas.
Later, he obtained a weight and dumbbell set, as well as a weightlifting pamphlet by Charles Atlas. His enthusiasm for exercise grew from there. In addition, he used to cover the walls of his room with Robby Robinson posters.
There isn’t much information available about Lee’s family members. But one thing was undeniable: Lee had a strong belief in his dream.
Haney eventually joined the local YMCA. He took an important step when he met Danny Rogers there, who impressed him with his physiques.
Danny inspired Haney to take bodybuilding seriously by displaying a well-balanced physique. Danny trained Lee for nearly four years and helped him shape up in 1973.
Despite receiving a scholarship to attend college at the age of eighteen, Haney declined the fellowship in order to focus solely on bodybuilding.
Haney later earned his bachelor’s degree in youth counseling from Spartanburg Methodist College. Lee participated in sports such as football and basketball during his college years.

Career
Lee became interested in bodybuilding after reading every weightlifting magazine and book available.
Later, at the age of sixteen, he began competing in competitions, and his professional bodybuilding career began in 1975.
Haney didn’t do well in his first competition, but he learned a lot from it because he didn’t know how to properly showcase his body on stage at the time.
However, in 1979, Lee defeated many formidable competitors to win the title of Mr. America. Because of the victory, he gained the confidence to compete in and win other events.
Haney was nineteen years old when he won the title in 1979, and he became more focused on winning another title.
Haney focused on intensive training and a strict diet plan for the next three years.
The following year, in 1982, he competed in the Junior Nationals in the Heavyweight Division and won the title.
Furthermore, Haney, who was 23 at the time, won the Heavyweight division title at the 1982 World Amateur Championships. Lee began a new journey in the nationals at the senior level the same year.
Lee learned from his defeat and competed in Mr. Olympia in 1984. He was twenty-five years old at the time when he won the title.
After winning Mr. Olympia in 1984, Haney held the title for seven years in a row, setting a world record.

Lee opened a gym in Atlanta, Georgia in 1993. Lee Haney’s World-class Fitness Center was the name of the gym.

Furthermore, he trained players from the NFL teams Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos, including Gary Sheffield, Shannon Sharpe, and Sean Bradley (Philadelphia 76ers).

Workout & Diet Plan
Mr. Olympia prefers training splits to sufficiently revive each muscle group. His workout schedule includes a four-day training split that includes three days of training and one day of rest.
The first day of the workout session is dedicated to the chest and arms, the second to the legs, the third to the back and shoulders, and the fourth to rest.
Haney advises bodybuilders to tone their muscles but never rub them off, as this increases the likelihood of injury. He also emphasizes the importance of a proper diet for every bodybuilder.
During the training sessions, he would consume approximately 6-7 meals, including proper protein such as carbs, fruits, fiber, and fats.
Haney is no longer in the bodybuilding business, but he still enjoys eating the same way he did when he was competing.
Haney also recommends taking essential multivitamins, protein powder, and detox supplements.
