Lemieux grew up with his two brothers named Alain Lemieux, and Richard Lemieux. However, the information about Mario is still unclear.
Mario started ice hockey when he was three years old in his basement. Before investing in adequate equipment, he played hockey with bottle caps for pucks and wooden kitchen spoons for sticks.
The boys practiced as much as they could on the rink his father had constructed in the front yard. Laval Voisins of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is where Lemieux made his professional debut.
When he was selected in the draft at the age of 15, he pledged that he would break league records. He urged coach Jean Begin to pair him up on the top line with Jacques Goyette during the 1983–84 QMJHL season. Likewise, Mario holds Canadian nationality.
How did Mario Lemieux start his Professional Career?
After finishing dead last the previous two seasons, the Pittsburgh Penguins needed a natural goal scorer to turn things around, so they picked Lemieux in the 1984 Entry Draft.
He took part in the NHL All-Star Game when he earned the title of MVP for the first time. He won the Calder Memorial Trophy in 1984–85 as the best rookie.
His second five-goal outing in 1989 proved crucial to a 10-7 win against the Philadelphia Flyers. He shared the record for the NHL’s most goals and points in a single playoff game, but the Penguins went on to lose the series.
Due to surgery for a ruptured disk, Lemieux missed 50 games in the 1990–91 NHL season. He later played again to help the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Minnesota North Stars to win the Stanley Cup.
In the 1996–97 season, the player fell short of Wayne Gretzky’s record of 600 goals in 718 games by scoring his 600th career goal in his 719th game.

His subsequent 100-point season was the ninth in his career. One of the best players in the history of the game, Mario concluded his career with 1,723 points from 915 regular-season games, 690 goals, and 1,033 assists.
He played in 17 National Hockey League (NHL) seasons between 1984 and 2006. Mario was selected first overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. In addition, he guided the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 1991 and 1992.
Under his ownership, the Penguins won more titles in 2009, 2016, and 2017. He is the only individual whose name appears on the Cup in both the capacities of player and owner.
Diagnosed with Cancer
To be clear, Lemieux was the site of the discovery of Hodgkin’s disease, a lymph node cancer. Lemieux planned to return to the team within 10 weeks following his injury, despite the prognosis.
In March, following a round of radiation treatment, he rejoined the Penguins. He scored and assisted in his return game. After that, the team won 15 straight games.
Despite the anticipation, Lemieux only participated in 22 games over the next two years. The 1993–94 season was then mostly missed by him due to a herniated muscle in his back.

He took a vacation from the 1994–1995 season to cure anemia brought on by his cancer therapy. Lemieux continued to play golf and exercise with a personal trainer, though.
Lemieux had to leave Team Canada for the 1996 World Cup because of ongoing health issues. He was still at the top of his career when he chose to retire in 1996-97, despite earning his sixth scoring title.
On January 24, 2006, Lemieux, being 40 years old, declared his second and last retirement from the NHL.
