Marty Lagina was born on August 26, 1955, in Kingsford, Michigan, Upper Peninsula to George Jacob Lagina and Ann Cavalieri Lagina. His father, late Mr. Lagina was a member of the Pine Grove Country Club. His mother, Late Mrs. Lagina was a motorcycle rider, treasure-hunter, and ex-dancer. He has two siblings; one sister Matina Lagina and a brother Rick Lagina. They are of Italian-American ethnicity. Both his sister and brother are also a TV personality like him.

Lagina attended the local high school in Michigan, Upper Peninsula. He completed his graduation in 1977 from Michigan University, East Lansing, Michigan with Honors in Mechanical Engineering.
