Mary Pierce was born Mary Caroline Pierce on January 15, 1975, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, to an American father and a French mother. Soon after her birth her parents, Jim and Yannick (Adjani) Pierce, married. Mary’s mother is French, but her father is American. She grew up in the USA.
The following year Pierce’s brother, David, was born. The family moved to Florida, where her father, an ex-Marine with a criminal record, made and sold jewelry.
In his first attempt at the classic middle-class American life, Pierce’s father joined the local country club and took up golf, and Pierce was persuaded to join the club’s junior tennis clinic.
After just a couple of sessions of watching the already athletic ten-year-old Pierce strike the ball, her father’s attention turned from golf to his daughter’s future in tennis. She holds American, French, and Canadian citizenship.

Just two weeks after picking up a racket for the first time, Pierce, who also participated in gymnastics and ballet as a child, defeated the twentieth ranked local player in a 12-and-under division tournament. By the age of 12, Pierce was the No. 2 player in the United States in the 12-and-under division.
Pierce played a professional tournament at the age of 14 years and 2 months at Hilton Head tournament in 1989 and set the record of youngest player to play a professional tournament, but that record was later broken by Jennifer Capriati.
She continued with her game but was unable to make a significant impact on the tour until she rose up to the top ten for the first time in 1994. The competition was tough for Mary but she was successful in bagging the Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in Melbourne in 1995 and became the first French woman to capture a major win since 1967 after a gap of 28 years.
Pierce suffered a series of defeats in the year 1996. She failed to defend her title at the 1996 Australian Open that resulted in her split with Coach Nick Bollettieri. She finishes as a runner up in Amelia Island, Florida and semifinal finish in Hamburg and also made her first appearance in Wimbledon reaches up to the quarterfinal.
Mary Pierce then went on to win Italian Open in 1997 defeating Conchita Martinez in the final 6–4, 6–0. In 1998, she added four more success to her kitty playing games in Paris, Moscow, Luxembourg, and Amelia Island and was the runner up in San Diego.

She won her second Grand Slam single and Grand Slam double title in the French Open tournament in 2000 defeating Conchita Martínez of Spain 6-2, 7-5 in single and Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain and Paola Suárez of Argentina in double partnering with Martina Hingis of Switzerland.
