Amateur
With the boys’ team from Virginia/Mountain Iron-Buhl, Niskanen first played hockey. He helped the Blue Devils qualify for their first-ever state junior tournament trip.
In his debut season, 2005–2006, he played for the Bulldogs men’s ice hockey team, participating in 38 games and recording 14 points. After that, he was selected for the 2006-07 First Team and the All-WCHA Scientific Team.
He eventually signed an amateur tryout contract with the Iowa Stars for the balance of the 2006–2007 campaign on March 19, 2007.
The Dallas Stars of the AHL at the time were the owners of the Iowa Stars (AHL). As a result, Matt decided to sign a three-year NHL contract with the Dallas Stars for the 2007–08 season.
Professional Career
Dallas Stars
Matt participated in his first NHL normal game against the Colorado Avalanche in October 2007. Two nights later, with two assists against the Boston Bruins, he broke his NHL scoring record.

Pittsburgh Penguins
After spending several seasons with the Stars, Matt and his coworker James Neal were traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Following that, Matt recorded more than one goal for the first time in a match at Bridgestone Stadium in the 2013–14 season on March 4, 2014.

Philadelphia Flyers
Following the expiration of his Capitals contract on June 14, 2019, Niskanen was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in trade for defender Radko Gudas.
On the Flyers’ top partnership in the 2019–20 season, Matt performed 68 games alongside Ivan Provorov and ranked second with 33 scores. In 15 postseason games, he helps Philadelphia with one score and one assist.
After one season with the Flyers, Matt’s first 7-year contract with the Capitals still had one year to go. Niskanen unexpectedly announced that he was quitting the NHL on October 5, 2020.

In November 2019, as Philadelphia was hammering the Detroit Red Wings defense 6-1, a shot was launched in Matt Niskanen’s face.
Dennis Cholowski, a defenseman for Detroit, blasted a ball from the blueline during the game that took a different path than typical. Despite the puck’s straight path to the defiant human figure, Matt was able to remain in the game.

Mario Lemieux was formerly a favorite player of Matt’s, and he had purchased a book on him in hoping to get his autograph on a photograph.
