Muriel Bowser was born on August 2, 1972, in Washington, D.C., the U.S to parents Joe and Joan Bowser. She grew up in North Michigan Park in northeast D.C. She is the youngest among six siblings. Muriel holds an American nationality and is of the African-American ethnicity.
Education
In 1990, she graduated from Elizabeth Seton High School and received a college scholarship due to her above-average grades. After that, she graduated from Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a bachelor’s degree in history, and she graduated from the American University School of Public Affairs with a Masters in Public Policy. She has a house in Colonial Village bought in 2015, moving from a Riggs Park duplex where she had lived since 2000.

Bowser began her political career in 2004, running unopposed for the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC). She represented district 4B09, which includes the neighborhood of Riggs Park. In 2006, she was unopposed when she ran for re-election.
She announced her reelection campaign for the council in 2008 and won the Democratic Party primary election, receiving 75 percent of votes. Jahi received 19%, Montague received 3%, and Mendenhall-Johnson received 2%.
On March 23, 2013, she revealed that she would run for Mayor of the District of Columbia in the 2014 election.
