Najib Razak is a Malaysian politician who had served as the 6th Prime Minister of Malaysia from 2009 to 2018. He is the member and President of the party UMNO which had the majority in the coalition government which was ruling the country until now.

This coalition had been going fine for 60 years until 2018 when it was completely defeated in the general elections.

Najib and his early life

Najib Razak was born on 23 July 1953 in Kuala Lipis, Malaya. He is the eldest son of the 2nd PM of Malaysia and the nephew of the 3rd PM of Malaysia. His younger brother Dato’ Seri Mohd Nazir Abdul Razak is in-charge of Bumiputra-Commerce Holdings Bhd.

He studied at the St. Johns Institution, KL. He later joined Malvern College in England and later attended the University of Nottingham where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in industrial economics in the year 1974. He is a golf lover.

Najib Razak’s early jobs

Najib started in the business world and was with the Malaysia Central Bank for sometime before he joined Petronas as a public affairs manager.

Najib’s political career

In 1976 after his father Abdul Razak’s death, Najib won from the seat and became a member of the Parliament. In 1986, he re-won from the same seat. He has handled several important portfolios during his tenure which included Energy, Telecommunications, and Post. He was also the CM of Pahang from 1982 to 1986. In 1986, he became Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports in Mahathir Mohamad’s cabinet.

He soon became the head of UMNO’s Pekan branch and was in charge of the Youth programs. He worked towards giving more financial stability and freedom to the non-Malays in Malaysia. He improved the country’s relations with Singapore. In 1988, he became the President of the UMNO Youth. He was elevated to be the Vice-President of UMNO in 1993 and was one of the prominent members of the party.

The other important portfolios he held were the Ministry of Defense from 1991 to 1995 and he was Minister of Education from 1995 to 2000. He retook the reigns of the Ministry of Defense in 2000 and continued to hold power until 2008. He made military service for Malaysian males compulsory in 2003. He was said to have carried out dubious purchases from France during his tenure as the Minister of Defense in 2002 and this is being investigated.

Najib as Deputy PM

In 2004, Najib took up the post of Deputy PM for 5 years. He soon was able to show his power and became the President of UMNO and also PM. He intended to work towards political reforms and domestic economic issues. He emphasized on oneness in Malaysia. He also tried to help poor Malaysians but most of his programs did not yield results. He had also launched the housing program and also made changes in the country’s economic policies. He gave stimulus packages and also caused economic liberalization.

The corruption charges

Najib has been charged with corruption charges and had to step down. More corruption charges and proofs started pouring in. More of his family members were involved. Special investigations were set up and a travel ban was imposed on him.

Najib-marriages and children

Najib is a married man with children. He has been married twice. In 1976, Najib married his first wife named Tengku Puteri Zainah Tengku Eskandar (‘Kui Yie’). The couple has three children named Mohd Nizar Najib (born 1978), Mohd Nazifuddin Najib and Puteri Norlisa Najib.

He divorced his first wife in 1987 and married  Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor with whom Najib has two children; Mohd Norashman Najib and Nooryana Najwa Najib.
