He joined the cast of NBC’s Saturday Night Live (SNL), where he impersonated Larry King, Burt Reynolds, David Letterman, Quentin Tarantino, Charles Kuralt, and Bob Dole, among others. Macdonald hosted Weekend Update the next year, during the show’s twentieth season. During a “Weekend Update” segment on Tabitha Soren on April 12, 1997, broadcast (host Rob Lowe, musical guest The Spice Girls), Macdonald unexpectedly coughed in the middle of a sentence and mumbled, “What the fuck was that?”
Then Norm remained a cast member on SNL, although he despised appearing in regular segments. Soon after leaving Saturday Night Live, Norman co-wrote and performed in Dirty Work (1998), directed by Bob Saget and co-starring Artie Lange and Chris Farley in his final film. Later the same year, he voiced Lucky the dog in Eddie Murphy’s Dr. Dolittle adaption. On an episode of Family Guy, Macdonald played the character of Death. Macdonald co-starred in the comedy The Norm Show (later renamed Norm) in 1999, alongside Laurie Metcalf, Artie Lange, and Ian Gomez. It aired on ABC for three seasons.
Earlier in 1999, Norm also had a cameo appearance in Milos Forman’s Andy Kaufman biographical film Man on the Moon. Then, he had already acted in Forman’s earlier film, The People vs. Larry Flynt, as a reporter sent to Flynt’s estate to investigate secret tapes implicating automaker John DeLorean.
For the second time, he played the lead in a film, Screwed, in 2000, which bombed at the box office. Likewise, he continues to star in films and television series.
